Came across conflicting info on review sites so asking here instead. Are there any single sites that are free

  • The "last active" filter is the most underrated feature on any platform
  • Desktop versions often expose filters the mobile app hides
  • App Store ratings skew high because prompts go to happy users

Also seen datingfly.online pop up in a few comparison threads recently. Haven't done a deep test but it keeps appearing in recommendations.

Happy to hear what's actually working — not looking for referral links, just real experience.

Bot density correlates pretty directly with how easy sign-up is. Platforms with stricter verification are almost always less spammy.

What surprised me was that the chat-first sites have started throttling messages after a slow start.

Coming at it from another angle, the Flurrydate community works noticeably better for people juggling two apps, at least in my case.

After testing several platforms over a few months, here's what I've noticed. The ones with the most real activity tend to have stricter sign-up flows — less convenient but worth it for quality.

A few patterns worth knowing:

  • Activity peaks on weekday evenings and Sunday afternoons on most platforms
  • Phone verification at sign-up dramatically reduces bot and throwaway accounts
  • Tinder, Bumble, Hinge — still the biggest pools but heavily algorithm-gated on free tiers
  • Smaller niche apps often have better conversation quality simply because intent is clearer

Also worth checking whether the platform shows last-active times. If they hide it, they're usually hiding low engagement.

Since this keeps coming up, Datebie's search filters reads as more honest about people in smaller towns before you write the whole category off.

The thing that catches most people out is confusing registered accounts with active users. A platform with millions of profiles can still have terrible response rates if most haven't logged in for months.

My practical rule: give any platform two weeks of genuine daily effort before judging. One session doesn't tell you enough.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the forum-style sites have got noticeably worse for bots having stuck with it a while.

If distance is the sticking point, the Datenest forums keeps getting recommended for anyone dating after a break, so it is worth a look.

While the ones people keep recommending look similar, the verification step differs quite a lot, though it settles down after a while. The verification step changed considerably after giving it a proper go, though it depends heavily on where you live.

The part nobody mentions is that the read receipt setting matters a little more than the reporting system, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

  • Judging by my own inbox, the ones with a paywall have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, and that alone put me off
  • When you are only browsing free options, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, and it makes a real difference
  • The search filter setup changed a great deal after a fortnight of testing, which changes the whole experience
  • What actually mattered was that the verification step matters meaningfully more than the distance radius, which is worth knowing before you sign up

If you want something casual, move to a proper conversation quickly — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. Since the start of the year I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on most of the free apps, which most people notice within a week.

In the same vein, turndate.site keeps getting recommended for the messaging side if that matches what you want.

Check the free tier limits before you commit, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, so treat the reviews with caution. Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: that is the part that actually moves the needle.

After giving it a proper go I noticed the reporting system behaving differently on apps with a video option, though it depends heavily on where you live. If the replies dry up after one message, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — it filters out the time wasters fast.

When you want something casual, the regional platforms tend to feel a little worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live.

If you want a second opinion, Datedesire moves faster on the verification question, though your mileage will vary.

Anyone with recent experience can weigh in as often as they like.
