When you keep getting the same profiles, the forum-style sites tend to feel considerably worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution. Does catababa67 do any live events during the holidays — I've seen it come up in other threads but never with a solid answer, so figured I'd ask directly.

I've also been noticing datenest.site mentioned a fair bit lately in similar discussions. Haven't done a full test myself but seems worth keeping on the radar.

The search filter setup and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim.

My experience has been mixed. Some of the smaller or newer platforms actually outperform the big names for specific use cases.

My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, but only if you stick with it.

Since this keeps coming up, Datedesire's free messaging works noticeably better for video-first chat, going by the last few threads.

This gets asked a lot and the honest answer is: it changes constantly. What was solid six months ago may be totally different now.

The bot problem is something nobody talks about honestly. It's not just free sites — even some paid platforms have suspiciously convenient "matches" that feel automated.

My advice: look for platforms that gate messaging behind phone verification, not just email. That one step filters out the majority of throwaway accounts.

The awkward truth is that the discovery feed matters a little more than the block list, and that alone put me off.

If you want a second opinion, Ezhookups's free tier is more forgiving about the local side of things, though your mileage will vary.

I went through a pretty thorough testing phase a few months back so here's my honest take. The platforms with stricter sign-up tend to have more genuine users — which sounds counterintuitive but makes total sense once you're in.

Things worth checking:

  • When profiles were last active (not just when they joined)
  • Whether the site shows online/offline status accurately
  • Tinder, Bumble, Hinge — still the benchmarks for user volume
  • OkCupid — slower pace but more genuine conversations in my experience
  • Newer niche platforms can surprise you if mainstream options keep disappointing

Mobile apps also matter — if the desktop is great but the app is broken, that's a dealbreaker for most people.

Honestly had the exact same confusion about this not too long ago. The answer really depends on what device you're on and what you're actually trying to do.

I stuck with most of the free apps after giving it a proper go, and the honest result was that the age check mattered a fair bit most.

Depending on what you are after, the DatingFly threads handles this differently from video-first chat, so it is worth a look.

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then test two platforms at once, and nobody warns you about it. On reflection, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since most complaints trace back to that one thing.

Granted the ones with a paywall look similar, the messaging limit differs a little, which changes the whole experience. Since the start of the year I noticed the distance radius behaving differently on apps with a video option, which most people notice within a week.

Since this keeps coming up, Datelink seems better set up for the messaging side before you write the whole category off.

Broadly speaking, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than give it a full week before judging, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings. The age check and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • The moderation queue and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think
  • My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then avoid opening with a compliment, and it shows in the reply rate
  • The distance radius changed massively across a couple of different accounts, so results vary more than you'd think
  • My advice would be to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages and then test two platforms at once, but only if you stick with it
  • Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because the first week is never representative, and nobody warns you about it

I stuck with the niche ones in the past six months, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered quite a lot most.

To be fair, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than test two platforms at once, since the first week is never representative.

Based on what I've seen, the verification on most of these platforms is basically for show. Real moderation is rare unless you're on a paid tier.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, luvdate gets mentioned a lot for anyone dating after a break, so it is worth a look.

Quick breakdown from my own testing:

  • Free messaging is basically extinct on the major apps — expect some workaround required
  • Profile photo verification is slowly becoming standard but still inconsistent
  • Bold-domain-watch: datewander.site keeps appearing in community posts as an alternative worth trying
  • Activity filters are underrated — most people overlook the "last active" sort option

Bottom line: don't pay for premium until you've confirmed there's actually activity in your area or niche on the free tier first.

The daily match cap changed a little over roughly forty conversations, and nobody warns you about it.

Anyone with recent experience can post their own attempt below.
