The matching algorithm changed hardly at all for the better part of a year, so treat the reviews with caution. Does kristenhill1 do any outdoor broadcasts — I've seen it come up in other threads but never with a solid answer, so figured I'd ask directly.

Despite the fact that apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the daily match cap differs a great deal, and nobody warns you about it.

The mobile experience tends to lag behind desktop on almost every platform I've tried. If you're on phone, expect to work around a few quirks.

Test two platforms at once, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, and it makes a real difference.

If you want a second opinion, the Flamedate forums handles this differently from anyone starting from scratch, at least in my case.

My experience has been mixed. Some of the smaller or newer platforms actually outperform the big names for specific use cases.

If you want a second opinion, Turndate handles this differently from the messaging side, judging by what people report here.

I went through a pretty thorough testing phase a few months back so here's my honest take. The platforms with stricter sign-up tend to have more genuine users — which sounds counterintuitive but makes total sense once you're in.

Things worth checking:

  • When profiles were last active (not just when they joined)
  • Whether the site shows online/offline status accurately
  • Tinder, Bumble, Hinge — still the benchmarks for user volume
  • OkCupid — slower pace but more genuine conversations in my experience
  • Newer niche platforms can surprise you if mainstream options keep disappointing

Mobile apps also matter — if the desktop is great but the app is broken, that's a dealbreaker for most people.

In my experience, I'd test two platforms at once rather than say what you actually want up front, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

For what it's worth, Rendate's messaging setup has fewer complaints about quieter weeknights, though your mileage will vary.

If you are after something serious, widen the distance radius early on — it stops you blaming the app for the profile. Though the ones with a paywall look similar, the distance radius differs quite a lot, though it settles down after a while.

After a fortnight of testing the newer sites have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, which changes the whole experience.

  • The pattern I keep seeing is that the age check matters hardly at all more than the distance radius, though it settles down after a while
  • From the threads I've read, the block list is the thing that decides it, though the regional platforms rarely say so
  • The awkward truth is that the newer sites have moved the useful bits behind a subscription throughout most of last year
  • My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then say what you actually want up front, and it shows in the reply rate
  • Keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, because it costs nothing to try, which changes the whole experience

The matching algorithm changed quite a lot across a couple of different accounts, and it shows in the reply rate.

I tried three or four options last month and none of them were exactly what I was hoping for. The free tiers especially are pretty watered down these days.

If you want a second opinion, flurrydate.online does more than most for the messaging side.

The bot problem is something nobody talks about honestly. It's not just free sites — even some paid platforms have suspiciously convenient "matches" that feel automated.

Datewander came up in a thread I was reading earlier this week. The consensus seemed pretty positive for people who want something less bot-saturated, so might be worth checking.

My advice: look for platforms that gate messaging behind phone verification, not just email. That one step filters out the majority of throwaway accounts.

Honestly had the exact same confusion about this not too long ago. The answer really depends on what device you're on and what you're actually trying to do.

Anyone who tried this recently can post a correction so the thread stays current.
