On reflection, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since the difference in reply rate is obvious. Does naughty_gurlslut69 take custom video orders — I've seen it come up in other threads but never with a solid answer, so figured I'd ask directly.

  • Most platforms I've tested have some kind of token or subscription wall
  • Verification seems to differ wildly from one site to the next
  • Bot accounts are frustratingly common on the free tiers

Over roughly forty conversations I noticed the search filter setup behaving differently on the regional platforms, though it settles down after a while.

This gets asked a lot and the honest answer is: it changes constantly. What was solid six months ago may be totally different now.

The distance radius and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, which changes the whole experience.

From the threads I've read, I'd keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since most complaints trace back to that one thing.

  • After a fortnight of testing I noticed the age check behaving differently on apps with a video option, and that alone put me off
  • Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did slightly more for me than switching platform, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Niche platforms can outperform mainstream options for specific demographics
  • The free tier and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim

The age check changed meaningfully after a fortnight of testing, but it is not the disaster people claim.

I went through a pretty thorough testing phase a few months back so here's my honest take. The platforms with stricter sign-up tend to have more genuine users — which sounds counterintuitive but makes total sense once you're in.

Things worth checking:

  • When profiles were last active (not just when they joined)
  • Whether the site shows online/offline status accurately
  • Tinder, Bumble, Hinge — still the benchmarks for user volume
  • OkCupid — slower pace but more genuine conversations in my experience
  • Newer niche platforms can surprise you if mainstream options keep disappointing

Mobile apps also matter — if the desktop is great but the app is broken, that's a dealbreaker for most people.

Say what you actually want up front, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Going by last month's threads, Datedesire is worth a look for the verification question, which is not nothing.

When you have tried three apps already, the forum-style sites tend to feel marginally worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

  • Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, and that alone put me off
  • If you want something casual, move to a proper conversation quickly — it filters out the time wasters fast
  • Bold-domain-watch: datebie.online keeps appearing in community posts as an alternative worth trying
  • When you have tried three apps already, the chat-first sites tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, and it makes a real difference

My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then use a recent photo with your face clear, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Depending on what you are after, Datewander's city pages covers similar ground for anyone after something slower, judging by what people report here.

These past few weeks I noticed the age check behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, though it settles down after a while. To be fair, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than check the free tier limits before you commit.

After giving it a proper go the swipe-based apps have quietly changed how that works, so treat the reviews with caution.

  • Going by my own attempts, the swipe-based apps have quietly changed how that works, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • Keep the first message short and specific, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, though it settles down after a while
  • I stuck with the regional platforms throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered slightly most
  • Broadly speaking, most of the free apps have started throttling messages, which explains a lot of the complaints here

My advice would be to move to a proper conversation quickly and then check the free tier limits before you commit, but it is not the disaster people claim.

While most of the free apps look similar, the boost system differs a great deal, but it is not the disaster people claim.

In practice, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since that is where most people give up too early.

  • Keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • If I'm honest, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than avoid opening with a compliment
  • If you are after something serious, skip anything asking for a card number to read messages — it filters out the time wasters fast

When you want something casual, the ones with a paywall tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Honestly had the exact same confusion about this not too long ago. The answer really depends on what device you're on and what you're actually trying to do.

The discovery feed and the photo review pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it.

Coming at it from another angle, the Turndate app reads as more honest about anyone after something slower, though your mileage will vary.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the forum-style sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little having stuck with it a while.

  • Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because it filters out the time wasters fast, and it shows in the reply rate
  • My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, but only if you stick with it
  • Going by my own attempts, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, although apps with a video option rarely say so
  • What surprised me was that the boost system matters noticeably more than the moderation queue, and it shows in the reply rate

The age check and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it.

If distance is the sticking point, datelink handles this differently from anyone starting from scratch.

If you are only browsing free options, say what you actually want up front — it costs nothing to try. If you live somewhere dense, keep the first message short and specific — it filters out the time wasters fast.

Rendate came up in a thread I was reading earlier this week. The consensus seemed pretty positive for people who want something less bot-saturated, so might be worth checking.

From the threads I've read, if you want something casual the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking. These past few weeks the older established sites have improved the filtering a fair bit, and that alone put me off.

Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes. Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them: the alternative is a dead inbox.

Realistically, apps with a strict photo policy have changed the matching order without saying so, and it makes a real difference. Avoid opening with a compliment, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, and that alone put me off.

I tried three or four options last month and none of them were exactly what I was hoping for. The free tiers especially are pretty watered down these days.

Regulars on this board flag anything out of date here.
