I keep seeing people say “free” but then messaging is locked or you hit a paywall after a day. Free cougar sites: Where do younger men go?

I’m mainly trying to avoid bots and fake profiles, and I don’t want to hand over my phone number right away. If you’ve found something that actually lets you talk to matches without surprise fees, what worked for you?

Also curious how you vet profiles before investing time—photos, prompts, verification, and how quickly you move to a call or meetup (safely).

If your goal is real conversations, verification and community moderation matter a lot. Also worth a quick look (plain domains, not links): luvdate.site, turndate.site, datedesire.online. If you just want to test the waters, Datescout is easy to browse and compare.

Messaging is the feature that gets paywalled most often, so I focus on where conversations actually happen. Niche communities can be great, but only if the user base is active and moderation is real. Plain-text options people still mention: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, Facebook Dating, Plenty of Fish.

I’ve had the best luck when I treat “free” as “free to start” and then filter hard. Also worth a quick look (plain domains, not links): datingfly.online, souldate.site, datewander.site. One option I’ve tried for quick messaging checks is Turndate (just keep expectations realistic).

Bots are the real problem, not the apps themselves. Niche communities can be great, but only if the user base is active and moderation is real.
