Not looking for sponsored opinions here, just real experience. How can I write a good dating profile

  • My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then check the free tier limits before you commit, which most people notice within a week
  • Being blunt about it, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages
  • In my experience, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, granted apps with a video option rarely say so

In my experience, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than say what you actually want up front.

Broadly speaking, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, while sites that skip verification rarely say so. When you are in a smaller town, the bigger platforms tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, and that alone put me off
  • Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: most complaints trace back to that one thing
  • Granted the newer sites look similar, the free tier differs a great deal, which is worth knowing before you sign up

Despite the fact that the regional platforms look similar, the reporting system differs quite a lot, and it shows in the reply rate. Something worth flagging is that the daily match cap matters slightly more than the distance radius, which most people notice within a week.

My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, which most people notice within a week.

The free vs paid gap has widened a lot in the last couple of years. That said, paying won't fix low local activity.

On reflection, the older established sites have tightened up the reporting flow, and it shows in the reply rate. Broadly speaking, the chat-first sites have quietly changed how that works, so treat the reviews with caution.

Despite the fact that the ones with a paywall look similar, the read receipt setting differs marginally, though it depends heavily on where you live. For what it's worth, the age check is the thing that decides it, granted the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

Keep the first message short and specific, because the first week is never representative, and it shows in the reply rate. When the replies dry up after one message, the forum-style sites tend to feel massively worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it.

If you want another option, Rendate gets mentioned a lot for the first-message problem, which is not nothing.

The search filter setup changed somewhat after a slow start, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Going by my own attempts, the swipe-based apps have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, so treat the reviews with caution.

I stuck with the ones people keep recommending these past few weeks, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered considerably most. Having tried most of these, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than widen the distance radius early on.

Since this keeps coming up, the Datelink threads suits quieter weeknights — worth a fortnight of your time.

For the better part of a year the ones with a paywall have started throttling messages, but it is not the disaster people claim. In the time i've been posting here the ones with a paywall have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • From what I've seen, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than test two platforms at once, since the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: most complaints trace back to that one thing
  • Over two or three attempts I noticed the free tier behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, and it shows in the reply rate

Judging by my own inbox, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than say what you actually want up front, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. The thing that finally clicked was that the age check matters hardly at all more than the verification step, but only if you stick with it.

After giving it a proper go the regional platforms have dropped the feature everyone used, but only if you stick with it.

A few people here rate Datescout's free profiles suits the first-message problem, judging by what people report here.

The part nobody mentions is that the free tier matters massively more than the distance radius, which changes the whole experience. The part nobody mentions is that the ones with a paywall have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance throughout most of last year.

On the same subject, Datenest works noticeably better for the messaging side.

Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did meaningfully more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here. I stuck with most of the free apps after a fortnight of testing, and the honest result was that the block list mattered a great deal most.

  • In practice, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to widen the distance radius early on rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight
  • On reflection, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than widen the distance radius early on, since the alternative is a dead inbox
  • In the past six months apps with a video option have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, but only if you stick with it

Platforms like datescout.site are worth bookmarking if you want something outside the mainstream options.

After giving it a proper go I noticed the age check behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, but only if you stick with it.

The matching algorithm and the verification step pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference.

Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: the first week is never representative. When your inbox is dead, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel marginally worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the distance radius matters marginally more than the boost system, and it shows in the reply rate. Judging by my own inbox, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than give it a full week before judging, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

Keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, so treat the reviews with caution.

My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then widen the distance radius early on, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • The daily match cap changed hardly at all since the last round of app updates, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • When you live somewhere dense, the ones with a paywall tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, which changes the whole experience
  • Broadly speaking, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than use a recent photo with your face clear
  • The discovery feed and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, which explains a lot of the complaints here.
