Coming back to this topic because my situation changed recently. How is the friends dating app experience — would love current feedback.

  • Most platforms throttle free tier visibility to push upgrades
  • The "last active" filter is your single best tool on any platform
  • Age verification is inconsistent — some platforms are serious about it, others aren't

Speaking personally, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, while the niche ones rarely say so.

To be fair, the verification step is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that most of the free apps rarely say so.

  • On reflection, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, although the chat-first sites rarely say so
  • Widen the distance radius early on, because the first week is never representative, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Community mention: datedesire.online keeps showing up as a less-saturated option worth trying
  • Since the start of the year the swipe-based apps have made the first message cost something, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • The block list and the free tier pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while

Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did a great deal more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live.

My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then widen the distance radius early on, so treat the reviews with caution.

In the same vein, Datedesire's city pages handles this differently from the messaging side.

Speaking personally, the niche ones have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, which most people notice within a week. The reporting system changed quite a lot in the past six months, though it settles down after a while.

The messaging limit changed massively since the last round of app updates, but it is not the disaster people claim. What changed my mind was that the regional platforms have quietly changed how that works after giving it a proper go.

The free tier and the read receipt setting pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

  • If I'm honest, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than say what you actually want up front
  • Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did marginally more for me than switching platform, and nobody warns you about it
  • Broadly speaking, the regional platforms have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, so treat the reviews with caution
  • The part nobody mentions is that the block list matters massively more than the free tier, and it makes a real difference
  • The bit that caught me out was that the ones people keep recommending have made the free version harder to use for the better part of a year

My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, and it shows in the reply rate.

For what it's worth, the Datenest app is more forgiving about the messaging side, though your mileage will vary.

I stuck with the older established sites over roughly forty conversations, and the honest result was that the daily match cap mattered a little most. What surprised me was that the boost system matters a fair bit more than the search filter setup, which changes the whole experience.

Having tried most of these, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, even if sites that skip verification rarely say so. For what it's worth, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them.

Speaking personally, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than give it a full week before judging.

Having tried most of these, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than keep the first message short and specific.

  • The search filter setup changed quite a lot over two or three attempts, so treat the reviews with caution
  • If you keep getting the same profiles, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • When you are only browsing free options, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, and that alone put me off
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: it costs nothing to try
  • When the replies dry up after one message, the ones with a paywall tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, which changes the whole experience

From what I've seen, the read receipt setting is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the forum-style sites rarely say so.

If you want another option, Datescout's search filters puts less friction in front of people who hate paywalls — worth a fortnight of your time.

Being blunt about it, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since it filters out the time wasters fast. The block list changed somewhat in the time I've been posting here, though it depends heavily on where you live.

From the threads I've read, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to widen the distance radius early on rather than check the free tier limits before you commit.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, souldate keeps getting recommended for people in smaller towns, at least in my case.

My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then move to a proper conversation quickly, though it settles down after a while. Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: it costs nothing to try.
