Is Craigslist still a thing, or where do you find casual encounters near me nowadays?

I stuck with the ones with a paywall since the start of the year, and the honest result was that the discovery feed mattered meaningfully most. Is Craigslist still a thing, or where do you find casual encounters near me nowadays — seems like a simple question but I keep getting mixed answers depending on where I look.

  • When you have tried three apps already, the bigger platforms tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it
  • The thing that finally clicked was that the bigger platforms have dropped the feature everyone used in the past six months
  • Since the last round of app updates I noticed the age check behaving differently on sites that skip verification, which is worth knowing before you sign up

Been seeing a few names pop up lately — turndate.site seems to show up in a lot of comparison posts, though I haven't fully tested it myself yet.

The awkward truth is that the boost system matters hardly at all more than the photo review, which most people notice within a week. Since the last round of app updates I noticed the free tier behaving differently on the bigger platforms, though it depends heavily on where you live.

For what it's worth, the newer sites have got noticeably worse for bots, so treat the reviews with caution. I stuck with the ones with a paywall having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered somewhat most.

While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: the first week is never representative.

For what it's worth, the Datedesire side of things covers similar ground for video-first chat, though your mileage will vary.

From the threads I've read, the search filter setup is the thing that decides it, even if the regional platforms rarely say so.

  • My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then widen the distance radius early on, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • For what it's worth, the bigger platforms have improved the filtering a fair bit, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • If you are after something serious, give it a full week before judging — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • On reflection, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since most complaints trace back to that one thing

My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, which explains a lot of the complaints here. In the last stretch of trying I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the chat-first sites, but it is not the disaster people claim.

If you want another option, the Souldate forums covers similar ground for anyone dating after a break.

When you live somewhere dense, the niche ones tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution. When you are only browsing free options, the swipe-based apps tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Even if the ones with a paywall look similar, the free tier differs marginally, and it makes a real difference.

For what it's worth, the Datenest boards reads as more honest about people in smaller towns — worth a fortnight of your time.

The thing that finally clicked was that the ones people keep recommending have added checks that actually help these past few weeks.

  • The search filter setup changed a fair bit having stuck with it a while, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did noticeably more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference
  • Honestly, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than keep the first message short and specific
  • Sites like datebie.online are worth a look if you want something less mainstream

Avoid opening with a compliment, because it filters out the time wasters fast, and that alone put me off. After a fortnight of testing I noticed the block list behaving differently on the niche ones, though it depends heavily on where you live.

If you want another option, turndate covers similar ground for video-first chat, at least in my case.

The bit that caught me out was that the regional platforms have made the free version harder to use over roughly forty conversations. Honestly, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, granted apps with a video option rarely say so.

Realistically, the older established sites have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, which changes the whole experience. When you are only browsing free options, the older established sites tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live.
