Been meaning to post this for a while — What are the free local personals that are safe is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

The bit that caught me out was that apps with a video option have tightened up the reporting flow having stuck with it a while.

I stuck with the bigger platforms across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered a great deal most. My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then keep the first message short and specific, but only if you stick with it.

While the forum-style sites look similar, the boost system differs somewhat, so treat the reviews with caution. While the forum-style sites look similar, the search filter setup differs a great deal, and that alone put me off.

Honestly, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to widen the distance radius early on rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them.

My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, though it settles down after a while.

  • Despite the fact that the swipe-based apps look similar, the photo review differs noticeably, and it shows in the reply rate
  • The pattern I keep seeing is that the search filter setup matters slightly more than the block list, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • The pattern I keep seeing is that most of the free apps have quietly changed how that works after a fortnight of testing
  • I stuck with the swipe-based apps since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered noticeably most
  • I stuck with apps with a video option after giving it a proper go, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered hardly at all most

In my experience, the chat-first sites have quietly changed how that works, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

If distance is the sticking point, the Turndate threads handles this differently from people in smaller towns, at least in my case.

Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because the first week is never representative, and that alone put me off. In my experience, the moderation queue is the thing that decides it, even if the regional platforms rarely say so.

In the past six months I noticed the free tier behaving differently on most of the free apps, so treat the reviews with caution.

  • My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then check the free tier limits before you commit, so treat the reviews with caution
  • From what I've seen, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did slightly more for me than switching platform, so results vary more than you'd think
  • The boost system changed somewhat in the time I've been posting here, and nobody warns you about it
  • Smaller platforms like datescout.site are worth a look for niche or less competitive niches

The detail people skip is that the forum-style sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little having stuck with it a while.

From what I've seen, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than widen the distance radius early on, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

For a change of pace, Datenest's city pages puts less friction in front of anyone starting from scratch if that matches what you want.

If you want something casual, keep the first message short and specific — that is where most people give up too early. In the past six months the chat-first sites have tightened up the reporting flow, which most people notice within a week.

The awkward truth is that the bigger platforms have added checks that actually help over roughly forty conversations.

  • The distance radius changed meaningfully since the start of the year, which most people notice within a week
  • I stuck with the swipe-based apps in the past six months, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered a fair bit most
  • Granted the niche ones look similar, the messaging limit differs quite a lot, but only if you stick with it
  • For the better part of a year I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on the chat-first sites, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • What surprised me was that the distance radius matters somewhat more than the photo review, but it is not the disaster people claim

The photo review and the boost system pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference.

Having tried most of these, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, while the ones with a paywall rarely say so.

The block list and the free tier pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it. In the time i've been posting here I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the older established sites, and that alone put me off.

Honestly, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than widen the distance radius early on, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did slightly more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, Datelink's search filters moves faster on wider search radiuses.

When you live somewhere dense, the newer sites tend to feel a little worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live. If I'm honest, the block list is the thing that decides it, even if the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

What surprised me was that the profile prompt matters considerably more than the photo review, and it makes a real difference.

If the replies dry up after one message, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. The photo review and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

In the same vein, the Datebie platform has fewer complaints about people juggling two apps, judging by what people report here.

If you keep matching but never talking, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — it costs nothing to try. The part nobody mentions is that the profile prompt matters marginally more than the search filter setup, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

For a change of pace, rendate.site is more forgiving about the local side of things before you write the whole category off.

From what I've seen, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, while the ones people keep recommending rarely say so. The read receipt setting changed noticeably having stuck with it a while, and that alone put me off.
