The matching algorithm and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Is free cam 4 actually better than the paid version — I've seen it come up in other threads but never with a solid answer, so figured I'd ask directly.

After giving it a proper go I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, so treat the reviews with caution.

Broadly speaking, the age check is the thing that decides it, though the niche ones rarely say so. I stuck with the swipe-based apps for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered marginally most.

Judging by my own inbox, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages. The daily match cap changed marginally these past few weeks, which changes the whole experience.

The free tier and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Since this keeps coming up, Rendate's free profiles works noticeably better for the messaging side, which is not nothing.

If you keep matching but never talking, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — that is the part that actually moves the needle. In my experience, the regional platforms have quietly changed how that works, which most people notice within a week.

My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then widen the distance radius early on, and that alone put me off. Although the regional platforms look similar, the age check differs hardly at all, so results vary more than you'd think.

In the past six months the forum-style sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, and that alone put me off. Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

On the same subject, Flurrydate's local search puts less friction in front of people who hate paywalls, though your mileage will vary.

If you have tried three apps already, give it a full week before judging — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, which changes the whole experience.

After a slow start I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • Despite the fact that most of the free apps look similar, the block list differs noticeably, and it shows in the reply rate
  • My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then widen the distance radius early on, which most people notice within a week
  • Since the start of the year I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, and it makes a real difference
  • Worth saying that the decision to keep the first message short and specific did somewhat more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference
  • My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then widen the distance radius early on, so results vary more than you'd think

If you want something casual, widen the distance radius early on — the alternative is a dead inbox.

When you keep matching but never talking, the older established sites tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, which most people notice within a week.

If you want a second opinion, the Datedesire forums is more forgiving about casual browsing.

Judging by my own inbox, I'd test two platforms at once rather than widen the distance radius early on, since the difference in reply rate is obvious. Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: it costs nothing to try.

Despite the fact that the ones with a paywall look similar, the boost system differs a great deal, which most people notice within a week. When you are in a smaller town, the swipe-based apps tend to feel marginally worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it.

When you are after something serious, sites that skip verification tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Going by my own attempts, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than use a recent photo with your face clear.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, Turndate suits anyone after something slower, at least in my case.

While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

  • Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, but only if you stick with it
  • After a slow start apps with a video option have dropped the feature everyone used, and nobody warns you about it
  • What actually mattered was that the block list matters a fair bit more than the daily match cap, which changes the whole experience
  • The photo review and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, which changes the whole experience

In the last stretch of trying I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, and nobody warns you about it.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, Flamedate does more than most for people who hate paywalls.

Anyone who tried this recently can reply with the details whenever a platform changes.
