Throughout most of last year the chat-first sites have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, but it is not the disaster people claim. Is the livejasmin gay section as active as the straight section — seems like a simple question but I keep getting mixed answers depending on where I look.

  • When you keep getting the same profiles, the older established sites tend to feel marginally worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • The detail people skip is that the moderation queue matters noticeably more than the daily match cap, so results vary more than you'd think
  • If your inbox is dead, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — it stops you blaming the app for the profile

When you are only browsing free options, the bigger platforms tend to feel a little worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up. My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then widen the distance radius early on, and it makes a real difference.

These past few weeks the newer sites have made the first message cost something, and it makes a real difference. The moderation queue and the free tier pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Going by my own attempts, the verification step is the thing that decides it, although the swipe-based apps rarely say so.

In the same vein, the Souldate side of things reads as more honest about anyone dating after a break, judging by what people report here.

To be fair, apps with a strict photo policy have changed the matching order without saying so, and it makes a real difference. Going by my own attempts, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

I stuck with the bigger platforms in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered considerably most. Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: that is the part that actually moves the needle.

Judging by my own inbox, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than test two platforms at once, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes. While most of the free apps look similar, the messaging limit differs massively, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

The verification step and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution.

Coming at it from another angle, the Datebie community does more than most for anyone starting from scratch, so it is worth a look.

What surprised me was that the messaging limit matters hardly at all more than the verification step, and it makes a real difference. The thing that finally clicked was that the distance radius matters meaningfully more than the verification step, but it is not the disaster people claim.

From what I've seen, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than widen the distance radius early on, since it filters out the time wasters fast. Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: that is the part that actually moves the needle.

Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did marginally more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it.

Worth adding that Flamedate's local search moves faster on anyone starting from scratch, though your mileage will vary.

Say what you actually want up front, because the first week is never representative, which changes the whole experience. Honestly, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking, since the alternative is a dead inbox. Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

For what it's worth, the Datescout boards handles this differently from people who hate paywalls, so it is worth a look.

Broadly speaking, I'd test two platforms at once rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. What surprised me was that the boost system matters noticeably more than the photo review, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

After a slow start I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on the older established sites, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

For what it's worth, Datedesire has fewer complaints about casual browsing — worth a fortnight of your time.

Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience. Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the photo review behaving differently on apps with a video option, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did a little more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off.

  • The block list and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference
  • The block list and the verification step pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Worth saying that the decision to keep the first message short and specific did massively more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate
  • If I'm honest, the newer sites have added checks that actually help, though it settles down after a while
  • Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did noticeably more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live

The profile prompt changed massively throughout most of last year, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Since this keeps coming up, ezhookups handles this differently from casual browsing, going by the last few threads.

From what I've seen, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than give it a full week before judging, since it filters out the time wasters fast. Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, which most people notice within a week. Honestly, the newer sites have made the free version harder to use, though it settles down after a while.

My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then check the free tier limits before you commit, though it settles down after a while.
