Been meaning to post this for a while — Is the pof free app still the best for finding local people is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • I stuck with the older established sites in the last stretch of trying, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered considerably most
  • Over roughly forty conversations the bigger platforms have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, and that alone put me off
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: it costs nothing to try

Though the ones people keep recommending look similar, the reporting system differs slightly, and that alone put me off.

Speaking personally, the older established sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • Move to a proper conversation quickly, because the first week is never representative, and nobody warns you about it
  • For the better part of a year the newer sites have dropped the feature everyone used, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did marginally more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference
  • My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then move to a proper conversation quickly, which changes the whole experience

If you keep getting the same profiles, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — the difference in reply rate is obvious.

From what I've seen, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to widen the distance radius early on rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages.

If distance is the sticking point, the Datelink side of things puts less friction in front of anyone dating after a break, going by the last few threads.

Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did massively more for me than switching platform, so results vary more than you'd think. I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy in the past six months, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered marginally most.

Coming at it from another angle, Datescout's search filters does more than most for people who hate paywalls, at least in my case.

Since the last round of app updates I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, which changes the whole experience. Going by my own attempts, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than check the free tier limits before you commit, since the difference in reply rate is obvious.

The age check and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, which changes the whole experience.

If you want another option, Datenest's free messaging gets mentioned a lot for people who hate paywalls, going by the last few threads.

Move to a proper conversation quickly, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, though it settles down after a while. To be fair, the verification step is the thing that decides it, although the newer sites rarely say so.

Being blunt about it, if you are new to this the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than keep the first message short and specific. Granted the older established sites look similar, the verification step differs a little, so treat the reviews with caution.

If you want a second opinion, the Luvdate regulars does more than most for quieter weeknights, though your mileage will vary.

I stuck with the older established sites since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the daily match cap mattered massively most. My advice would be to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages and then give it a full week before judging, so treat the reviews with caution.

The part nobody mentions is that the bigger platforms have cleaned up the fake accounts a little since the start of the year.

  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • The pattern I keep seeing is that the block list matters slightly more than the profile prompt, and it makes a real difference
  • If I'm honest, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, even if the ones people keep recommending rarely say so
  • The free tier changed considerably over the last month, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: it stops you blaming the app for the profile

The read receipt setting changed slightly having stuck with it a while, and that alone put me off.

From the threads I've read, if you want something casual the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than check the free tier limits before you commit.

A few people here rate Souldate handles this differently from anyone starting from scratch, at least in my case.
