This is one of those topics where you have to read between the lines on review sites. In my experience, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than keep the first message short and specific, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile. Is the single 50 dating site better than Bumble — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

From the threads I've read, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than test two platforms at once. The moderation queue changed marginally after giving it a proper go, so treat the reviews with caution.

Honestly, the block list is the thing that decides it, granted the ones with a paywall rarely say so. From the threads I've read, if you are new to this the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than move to a proper conversation quickly.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: it costs nothing to try.

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: it costs nothing to try. The thing that finally clicked was that the ones people keep recommending have improved the filtering a fair bit after a slow start.

Worth saying that the decision to read the last few pages of a thread before asking did massively more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience. The verification step changed a great deal across a couple of different accounts, though it settles down after a while.

Worth adding that the Souldate platform is worth a look for anyone starting from scratch — worth a fortnight of your time.

Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, and it makes a real difference.

  • Being blunt about it, if you want something casual the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them
  • When you are after something serious, the bigger platforms tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, and that alone put me off
  • My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, and it makes a real difference
  • Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: it stops you blaming the app for the profile

While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: most complaints trace back to that one thing. After giving it a proper go the bigger platforms have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, and nobody warns you about it.

The daily match cap and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference.

When you are in a smaller town, the niche ones tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, though it settles down after a while. On reflection, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than test two platforms at once, since the difference in reply rate is obvious.

The verification step and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it. Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference.

If you want a second opinion, Flurrydate reads as more honest about anyone after something slower, at least in my case.

When you live somewhere dense, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel a little worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim. When you keep matching but never talking, the bigger platforms tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live.

My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then use a recent photo with your face clear, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

  • The free tier changed a great deal since the start of the year, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • In practice, apps with a strict photo policy have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • What changed my mind was that the forum-style sites have quietly changed how that works across a couple of different accounts
  • Say what you actually want up front, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, and that alone put me off

The profile prompt and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, which most people notice within a week. What changed my mind was that the regional platforms have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance in the last stretch of trying.

Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the free tier behaving differently on the older established sites, though it settles down after a while.

If you want a second opinion, Datenest's local search seems better set up for quieter weeknights, which is not nothing.

Something worth flagging is that the swipe-based apps have made the first message cost something since the start of the year. I stuck with the newer sites since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the age check mattered meaningfully most.

Worth saying that the decision to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate. These past few weeks sites that skip verification have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

If distance is the sticking point, Turndate works noticeably better for people juggling two apps.

When you keep matching but never talking, apps with a video option tend to feel a little worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it. Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: that is where most people give up too early.

A few people here rate luvdate covers similar ground for people in smaller towns, which is not nothing.

Anyone who disagrees can flag anything out of date to this thread.
