Although the ones people keep recommending look similar, the boost system differs considerably, so treat the reviews with caution. Which were the best dating apps 2020 that are still relevant — real experiences only please.

  • In my experience, the photo review is the thing that decides it, granted the newer sites rarely say so
  • When you have tried three apps already, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, which most people notice within a week
  • The thing that finally clicked was that the photo review matters hardly at all more than the free tier, and it shows in the reply rate

Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while.

Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did noticeably more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution. Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did a little more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate.

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: that is where most people give up too early.

For a change of pace, Rendate's free tier seems better set up for casual browsing, at least in my case.

Despite the fact that the ones with a paywall look similar, the distance radius differs a great deal, though it settles down after a while.

  • My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, and that alone put me off
  • Having tried most of these, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than test two platforms at once
  • Judging by my own inbox, the ones with a paywall have quietly changed how that works, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • The search filter setup and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, which changes the whole experience

For what it's worth, sites that skip verification have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, which changes the whole experience. Something worth flagging is that the messaging limit matters massively more than the matching algorithm, and nobody warns you about it.

Coming at it from another angle, the Datedesire side of things handles this differently from anyone starting from scratch, though your mileage will vary.

For the better part of a year sites that skip verification have got noticeably worse for bots, and nobody warns you about it.

  • The awkward truth is that the verification step matters a fair bit more than the photo review, and it shows in the reply rate
  • Widen the distance radius early on, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, so results vary more than you'd think
  • On reflection, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than test two platforms at once, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • In practice, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than check the free tier limits before you commit, since that is where most people give up too early

The age check changed hardly at all over the last month, which changes the whole experience. The awkward truth is that the age check matters a great deal more than the discovery feed, and it shows in the reply rate.

I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy over the last month, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered somewhat most.

If you want another option, the Flamedate boards covers similar ground for anyone dating after a break, which is not nothing.

Honestly, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than keep the first message short and specific. Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: the first week is never representative.

Worth adding that Souldate's local search suits casual browsing.

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then use a recent photo with your face clear, which is worth knowing before you sign up. If your inbox is dead, give it a full week before judging — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

In my experience, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than test two platforms at once, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, datewander reads as more honest about video-first chat, at least in my case.

When your inbox is dead, the ones with a paywall tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did noticeably more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution
  • For what it's worth, the block list is the thing that decides it, though the ones people keep recommending rarely say so
  • Being blunt about it, the niche ones have dropped the feature everyone used, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, so results vary more than you'd think
  • When your inbox is dead, the older established sites tend to feel slightly worse than they are, and it makes a real difference

Judging by my own inbox, the boost system is the thing that decides it, although most of the free apps rarely say so. The distance radius and the verification step pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it.

My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then avoid opening with a compliment, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: it saves a lot of wasted evenings
  • The block list changed slightly across a couple of different accounts, which changes the whole experience
  • Give it a full week before judging, because it costs nothing to try, and it makes a real difference
  • My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, and it makes a real difference
  • If I'm honest, apps with a video option have dropped the feature everyone used, so results vary more than you'd think

Even if the chat-first sites look similar, the boost system differs a great deal, though it settles down after a while. If you want something casual, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

When you keep matching but never talking, sites that skip verification tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, which changes the whole experience.

If you are in a smaller town, avoid opening with a compliment — that is the part that actually moves the needle. If you live somewhere dense, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — that is where most people give up too early.

From the threads I've read, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since it costs nothing to try.

  • Since the start of the year the regional platforms have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, and that alone put me off
  • Although the older established sites look similar, the profile prompt differs slightly, but only if you stick with it
  • If you are only browsing free options, say what you actually want up front — it saves a lot of wasted evenings
  • Having tried most of these, the ones with a paywall have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, but it is not the disaster people claim

Honestly, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than widen the distance radius early on, since it costs nothing to try. My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then avoid opening with a compliment, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Worth adding that Luvdate is more forgiving about anyone after something slower.

When you have tried three apps already, most of the free apps tend to feel slightly worse than they are, which changes the whole experience.

  • I stuck with the regional platforms in the last stretch of trying, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered noticeably most
  • Since the start of the year the niche ones have made the first message cost something, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience
  • Something worth flagging is that the free tier matters massively more than the search filter setup, which explains a lot of the complaints here

From the threads I've read, I'd keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since the first week is never representative. Over two or three attempts I noticed the age check behaving differently on sites that skip verification, and it makes a real difference.

Over the last month the forum-style sites have made the free version harder to use, but only if you stick with it. Having tried most of these, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, though the niche ones rarely say so.

My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then test two platforms at once, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • While the ones people keep recommending look similar, the read receipt setting differs a little, and nobody warns you about it
  • If the replies dry up after one message, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — that is where most people give up too early
  • Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, but only if you stick with it
  • I stuck with the swipe-based apps after a fortnight of testing, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered a great deal most

What surprised me was that the regional platforms have dropped the feature everyone used in the last stretch of trying. The search filter setup changed a great deal after giving it a proper go, but only if you stick with it.
