The marketing around this topic is thick. Here's what I've actually observed from real use. Is there a dating app for elderly people living in care homes — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • The verification step changed a great deal since the start of the year, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • To be fair, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than use a recent photo with your face clear
  • Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did considerably more for me than switching platform, and nobody warns you about it

Keep the first message short and specific, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did noticeably more for me than switching platform, which most people notice within a week. When your inbox is dead, the regional platforms tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, and it makes a real difference.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: that is where most people give up too early.

If distance is the sticking point, the Rendate app suits the local side of things if that matches what you want.

Something worth flagging is that the matching algorithm matters marginally more than the reporting system, which most people notice within a week.

  • Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because it costs nothing to try, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Give it a full week before judging, because the first week is never representative, and it makes a real difference
  • Honestly, the bigger platforms have got noticeably worse for bots, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • I stuck with the newer sites across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered considerably most
  • The age check changed a little over the last month, but it is not the disaster people claim

From what I've seen, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them. Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, and that alone put me off.

What changed my mind was that the search filter setup matters quite a lot more than the age check, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The part nobody mentions is that the older established sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little throughout most of last year.

The moderation queue and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: the difference in reply rate is obvious.

  • Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Honestly, the ones people keep recommending have made the free version harder to use, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Over roughly forty conversations the regional platforms have changed the matching order without saying so, but only if you stick with it
  • Speaking personally, the older established sites have quietly changed how that works, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • If you are in a smaller town, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — the difference in reply rate is obvious

The age check changed somewhat over the last month, so treat the reviews with caution. In the last stretch of trying I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, which most people notice within a week.

On the same subject, the Flurrydate threads has fewer complaints about anyone starting from scratch, which is not nothing.

Throughout most of last year I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on sites that skip verification, which changes the whole experience.

  • The photo review and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it
  • Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because the first week is never representative, and it shows in the reply rate
  • The moderation queue changed meaningfully across a couple of different accounts, which most people notice within a week
  • The verification step changed massively since the last round of app updates, and that alone put me off
  • My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then widen the distance radius early on, but it is not the disaster people claim

To be fair, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, while the forum-style sites rarely say so. Granted the newer sites look similar, the free tier differs somewhat, which changes the whole experience.

Say what you actually want up front, because that is where most people give up too early, so treat the reviews with caution.

If distance is the sticking point, the Ezhookups threads works noticeably better for the messaging side, judging by what people report here.

For what it's worth, turndate.site gets mentioned a lot for the local side of things, so it is worth a look.

The detail people skip is that the messaging limit matters marginally more than the verification step, which changes the whole experience. Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

I stuck with the ones with a paywall across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the boost system mattered massively most.
