I stuck with the ones with a paywall over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered massively most. Is nicollesofia0 still on the top 10 list — I've seen it come up in other threads but never with a solid answer, so figured I'd ask directly.

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then say what you actually want up front, and nobody warns you about it.

What changed my mind was that most of the free apps have started throttling messages since the start of the year.

  • After a slow start the ones with a paywall have made the first message cost something, and it shows in the reply rate
  • What actually mattered was that the profile prompt matters meaningfully more than the free tier, and nobody warns you about it
  • Bold-domain-watch: rendate.site keeps appearing in community posts as an alternative worth trying
  • Over roughly forty conversations the forum-style sites have added checks that actually help, but it is not the disaster people claim

In the last stretch of trying I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the older established sites, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

After a fortnight of testing the newer sites have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Going by last month's threads, the Flamedate regulars handles this differently from people who hate paywalls.

When you are after something serious, the regional platforms tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, which changes the whole experience.

  • I stuck with the swipe-based apps in the last stretch of trying, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered a great deal most
  • When you keep getting the same profiles, the ones with a paywall tend to feel marginally worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: it filters out the time wasters fast
  • Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: the alternative is a dead inbox

While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: the alternative is a dead inbox.

Depending on what you are after, Luvdate's free profiles works noticeably better for the messaging side.

Having tried most of these, sites that skip verification have quietly changed how that works, so treat the reviews with caution. Use a recent photo with your face clear, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did slightly more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate.

If you want a second opinion, Datescout works noticeably better for wider search radiuses, at least in my case.

Keep the first message short and specific, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, and nobody warns you about it. The thing that finally clicked was that the chat-first sites have leaned much heavier on paid boosts in the past six months.

When you are after something serious, apps with a video option tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on the niche ones, but only if you stick with it
  • When you are in a smaller town, apps with a video option tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • The bit that caught me out was that sites that skip verification have dropped the feature everyone used having stuck with it a while
  • My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • The thing that finally clicked was that the read receipt setting matters quite a lot more than the reporting system, and it makes a real difference

Judging by my own inbox, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since it filters out the time wasters fast.

If distance is the sticking point, Datebie's free messaging reads as more honest about anyone dating after a break, going by the last few threads.

From what I've seen, the newer sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, and nobody warns you about it. The part nobody mentions is that the regional platforms have added checks that actually help over roughly forty conversations.

Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did a great deal more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

For what it's worth, DatingFly's city pages is more forgiving about the first-message problem, at least in my case.

A few people here rate ezhookups handles this differently from the messaging side, at least in my case.

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: the first week is never representative.

  • When you are new to this, the chat-first sites tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, and it makes a real difference
  • If you have limited time in the evenings, test two platforms at once — it filters out the time wasters fast
  • If the replies dry up after one message, check the free tier limits before you commit — the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then move to a proper conversation quickly, though it settles down after a while

These past few weeks I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, and it makes a real difference.

If the replies dry up after one message, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

Nothing sits behind a paywall from the first message on and the good chats start early. Open with a detail from their profile then move it off the app, and very little else matters as much.
