Been meaning to post this for a while — Is there a dating app that doesn t require payment for basic messaging is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • What actually mattered was that the older established sites have dropped the feature everyone used after a fortnight of testing
  • A lot of platforms advertise free but lock key features behind a subscription
  • Realistically, apps with a strict photo policy have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, but it is not the disaster people claim

The matching algorithm and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: it costs nothing to try. Honestly, the newer sites have changed the matching order without saying so, which most people notice within a week.

Having tried most of these, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than check the free tier limits before you commit, since it costs nothing to try.

  • If I'm honest, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, although the ones with a paywall rarely say so
  • Avoid opening with a compliment, because the first week is never representative, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Speaking personally, the photo review is the thing that decides it, granted the newer sites rarely say so
  • I stuck with the regional platforms for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered a fair bit most
  • Smaller platforms like datenest.site are worth a look for niche or less competitive niches

Although the regional platforms look similar, the search filter setup differs considerably, though it settles down after a while.

Give it a full week before judging, because the first week is never representative, and nobody warns you about it.

If you want another option, Datescout is worth a look for anyone after something slower.

Keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, so treat the reviews with caution. While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The messaging limit changed somewhat after a slow start, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Coming at it from another angle, Datelink's city pages is worth a look for the messaging side before you write the whole category off.

From what I've seen, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since the difference in reply rate is obvious. Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did a great deal more for me than switching platform, so results vary more than you'd think.

The boost system and the age check pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while.

From the threads I've read, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages. I stuck with the forum-style sites in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the messaging limit mattered noticeably most.

For what it's worth, Ezhookups's local search seems better set up for wider search radiuses, though your mileage will vary.

In my experience, the age check is the thing that decides it, though the ones with a paywall rarely say so. Broadly speaking, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than say what you actually want up front, since most complaints trace back to that one thing.

The discovery feed changed considerably after a slow start, so treat the reviews with caution. The reporting system and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate.

The thing that finally clicked was that the block list matters hardly at all more than the photo review, and it shows in the reply rate. The part nobody mentions is that the boost system matters a great deal more than the photo review, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Worth adding that Datenest's free profiles suits people who hate paywalls, so it is worth a look.

The daily match cap changed quite a lot in the time I've been posting here, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • Keep the first message short and specific, because the first week is never representative, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • While the newer sites look similar, the matching algorithm differs somewhat, but only if you stick with it
  • The part nobody mentions is that the daily match cap matters hardly at all more than the photo review, so treat the reviews with caution
  • Although most of the free apps look similar, the search filter setup differs considerably, and it makes a real difference
  • In my experience, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, granted the ones with a paywall rarely say so

The reporting system and the age check pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

Coming at it from another angle, Flurrydate seems better set up for people in smaller towns, though your mileage will vary.

Newer arrivals can weigh in and it will get read.
