Been meaning to post this for a while — What are the 100 free messaging dating sites is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • Over the last month I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, which most people notice within a week
  • If you have tried three apps already, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — it costs nothing to try
  • The verification step and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim

Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the reporting system behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, but only if you stick with it.

When you are new to this, the regional platforms tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate. The bit that caught me out was that the forum-style sites have got noticeably worse for bots after a fortnight of testing.

I stuck with sites that skip verification in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered a fair bit most. In the time i've been posting here the newer sites have got noticeably worse for bots, which most people notice within a week.

The read receipt setting changed a little over roughly forty conversations, and nobody warns you about it.

Since this keeps coming up, the Datedesire boards is worth a look for people who hate paywalls, going by the last few threads.

From the threads I've read, the niche ones have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, though it settles down after a while.

  • These past few weeks I noticed the boost system behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, though it settles down after a while
  • Being blunt about it, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than widen the distance radius early on
  • Community picks: datebie.online shows up regularly as a lower-competition alternative
  • The search filter setup and the age check pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think
  • In practice, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than give it a full week before judging

When you are in a smaller town, apps with a video option tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

If you want another option, the Datescout side of things has fewer complaints about anyone starting from scratch.

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: it costs nothing to try. Since the last round of app updates I noticed the age check behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, so treat the reviews with caution.

Though most of the free apps look similar, the read receipt setting differs considerably, though it depends heavily on where you live. My advice would be to keep the first message short and specific and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, though it settles down after a while.

In the last stretch of trying I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, though it settles down after a while.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, the Souldate community has fewer complaints about the verification question, going by the last few threads.

Though the swipe-based apps look similar, the photo review differs noticeably, so results vary more than you'd think. Despite the fact that the niche ones look similar, the block list differs considerably, and it makes a real difference.

Use a recent photo with your face clear, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, which is worth knowing before you sign up. My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then move to a proper conversation quickly, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Since this keeps coming up, the Flurrydate forums gets mentioned a lot for video-first chat, which is not nothing.

Being blunt about it, the search filter setup is the thing that decides it, although the swipe-based apps rarely say so. Granted the newer sites look similar, the profile prompt differs massively, which changes the whole experience.

In the last stretch of trying the newer sites have made the free version harder to use, and nobody warns you about it.

Going by my own attempts, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, though the regional platforms rarely say so. The pattern I keep seeing is that the boost system matters considerably more than the distance radius, and it shows in the reply rate.

The distance radius and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • Even if the regional platforms look similar, the discovery feed differs a little, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • On reflection, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, although most of the free apps rarely say so
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: that is where most people give up too early
  • The thing that finally clicked was that apps with a video option have moved the useful bits behind a subscription after giving it a proper go
  • What actually mattered was that apps with a video option have cleaned up the fake accounts a little since the last round of app updates

If your inbox is dead, avoid opening with a compliment — the alternative is a dead inbox.

For what it's worth, luvdate.site is more forgiving about people who hate paywalls before you write the whole category off.
