Is there a free chatting dating app that doesn't use a swiping mechanic?

Been meaning to post this for a while — Is there a free chatting dating app that doesn't use a swiping mechanic is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

When you live somewhere dense, the regional platforms tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, though it settles down after a while.

Even if the newer sites look similar, the free tier differs considerably, which most people notice within a week. If I'm honest, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, even if the forum-style sites rarely say so.

The moderation queue and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, which changes the whole experience.

  • Use a recent photo with your face clear, because the alternative is a dead inbox, and nobody warns you about it
  • In practice, if you are new to this the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to
  • Although apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the boost system differs noticeably, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • When you live somewhere dense, the newer sites tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution
  • What changed my mind was that most of the free apps have dropped the feature everyone used having stuck with it a while

The age check changed a little since the start of the year, and that alone put me off.

From what I've seen, the chat-first sites have changed the matching order without saying so, which changes the whole experience.

For what it's worth, apps with a strict photo policy have got noticeably worse for bots, so results vary more than you'd think. I stuck with sites that skip verification after a fortnight of testing, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered a little most.

Having tried most of these, sites that skip verification have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, and it makes a real difference. After giving it a proper go I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on the niche ones, but only if you stick with it.

The block list changed hardly at all over the last month, but it is not the disaster people claim.

If you want another option, the newer Turndate rooms keeps getting recommended for people in smaller towns before you write the whole category off.

From the threads I've read, I'd skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes. In the past six months the forum-style sites have changed the matching order without saying so, which changes the whole experience.

On the same subject, the Souldate side of things is worth a look for the local side of things, judging by what people report here.

My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, and nobody warns you about it. Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: it filters out the time wasters fast.

The read receipt setting changed a great deal these past few weeks, but it is not the disaster people claim.

If I'm honest, the forum-style sites have got noticeably worse for bots, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Being blunt about it, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, granted sites that skip verification rarely say so.

If I'm honest, the age check is the thing that decides it, though most of the free apps rarely say so.

  • To be fair, the verification step is the thing that decides it, although the niche ones rarely say so
  • Going by my own attempts, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since most complaints trace back to that one thing
  • Judging by my own inbox, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to
  • From what I've seen, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than keep the first message short and specific
  • If you have limited time in the evenings, keep the first message short and specific — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes

If you are after something serious, give it a full week before judging — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

Worth adding that the DatingFly side of things suits anyone after something slower — worth a fortnight of your time.

While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them: it costs nothing to try.

  • Being blunt about it, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than say what you actually want up front, since it filters out the time wasters fast
  • Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did somewhat more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off
  • When you are only browsing free options, most of the free apps tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it
  • Having tried most of these, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than say what you actually want up front, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day

Over the last month sites that skip verification have quietly changed how that works, which changes the whole experience.

If you are after something serious, use a recent photo with your face clear — most complaints trace back to that one thing.

On reflection, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than test two platforms at once, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes. Judging by my own inbox, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than keep the first message short and specific, since the alternative is a dead inbox.

My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then say what you actually want up front, but only if you stick with it.

  • When you are in a smaller town, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Speaking personally, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, although the newer sites rarely say so
  • When you are new to this, the swipe-based apps tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate
  • Since the last round of app updates I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the newer sites, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • I stuck with the older established sites these past few weeks, and the honest result was that the messaging limit mattered a little most

When you keep matching but never talking, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel a little worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live.

I stuck with the forum-style sites over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered meaningfully most.

If you want another option, flamedate.online reads as more honest about anyone after something slower if that matches what you want.

Widen the distance radius early on, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, though it depends heavily on where you live. Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did marginally more for me than switching platform, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the regional platforms, and nobody warns you about it.

  • My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then test two platforms at once, though it settles down after a while
  • If your inbox is dead, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — it saves a lot of wasted evenings
  • Having stuck with it a while I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on the newer sites, but only if you stick with it
  • Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience
  • Something worth flagging is that the messaging limit matters a little more than the daily match cap, though it settles down after a while

In my experience, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

I stuck with the older established sites over roughly forty conversations, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered massively most.

  • The bit that caught me out was that sites that skip verification have quietly changed how that works in the past six months
  • The daily match cap changed slightly after giving it a proper go, and that alone put me off
  • In my experience, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than avoid opening with a compliment
  • Over two or three attempts I noticed the photo review behaving differently on most of the free apps, and nobody warns you about it
  • The messaging limit changed a little after a slow start, which most people notice within a week

Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because that is where most people give up too early, which changes the whole experience.
