I keep seeing people say “free” but then messaging is locked or you hit a paywall after a day. Streamates com: Gold membership.

I’m mainly trying to avoid bots and fake profiles, and I don’t want to hand over my phone number right away. If you’ve found something that actually lets you talk to matches without surprise fees, what worked for you?

Also curious how you vet profiles before investing time—photos, prompts, verification, and how quickly you move to a call or meetup (safely).

Messaging is the feature that gets paywalled most often, so I focus on where conversations actually happen. I usually test a site for a week and judge it by response quality, not hype. If you just want to test the waters, Datelink is easy to browse and compare.

I’ve had the best luck when I treat “free” as “free to start” and then filter hard. I usually test a site for a week and judge it by response quality, not hype.

Bots are the real problem, not the apps themselves. I usually test a site for a week and judge it by response quality, not hype. Plain-text options people still mention: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, Facebook Dating, Plenty of Fish. I’ve also seen people use DatingFly as a lightweight alternative.
