Been meaning to post this for a while — What are some good free dating apps for finding a long-distance partner is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

In the past six months I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the forum-style sites, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

The detail people skip is that the free tier matters noticeably more than the reporting system, so treat the reviews with caution. My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then give it a full week before judging, though it settles down after a while.

Despite the fact that the chat-first sites look similar, the profile prompt differs a great deal, but it is not the disaster people claim.

On the same subject, Datescout's local search puts less friction in front of anyone starting from scratch, going by the last few threads.

I stuck with the ones people keep recommending since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered noticeably most. Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

If I'm honest, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages. Honestly, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them.

I stuck with the swipe-based apps over the last month, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered noticeably most.

I stuck with the ones with a paywall since the start of the year, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered quite a lot most. My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then move to a proper conversation quickly, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: it filters out the time wasters fast. Granted the chat-first sites look similar, the block list differs a great deal, but it is not the disaster people claim.

In practice, the newer sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, which changes the whole experience.

  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: the alternative is a dead inbox
  • My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then give it a full week before judging, so treat the reviews with caution
  • If you keep matching but never talking, avoid opening with a compliment — that is where most people give up too early
  • Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did a great deal more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • The block list and the free tier pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: most complaints trace back to that one thing.

The awkward truth is that the block list matters a great deal more than the messaging limit, which changes the whole experience.

Across a couple of different accounts the forum-style sites have got noticeably worse for bots, though it settles down after a while. After giving it a proper go the ones people keep recommending have tightened up the reporting flow, but only if you stick with it.

After a fortnight of testing the ones people keep recommending have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Granted the forum-style sites look similar, the matching algorithm differs massively, though it depends heavily on where you live.

If you want a second opinion, the Ezhookups threads is more forgiving about the local side of things if that matches what you want.

What actually mattered was that the moderation queue matters hardly at all more than the free tier, and it shows in the reply rate. Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did massively more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate.

What surprised me was that the older established sites have moved the useful bits behind a subscription over two or three attempts.

  • What actually mattered was that the older established sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little across a couple of different accounts
  • What surprised me was that the swipe-based apps have leaned much heavier on paid boosts in the past six months
  • The photo review and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it
  • In my experience, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since it costs nothing to try
  • In the past six months sites that skip verification have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, which most people notice within a week

To be fair, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that apps with a video option rarely say so.

Even if the chat-first sites look similar, the search filter setup differs marginally, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Depending on what you are after, Flurrydate's messaging setup covers similar ground for people who hate paywalls, which is not nothing.

Having tried most of these, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings. If I'm honest, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than widen the distance radius early on.

If you want something casual, check the free tier limits before you commit — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. Speaking personally, the bigger platforms have made the free version harder to use, and nobody warns you about it.

When you are only browsing free options, the ones with a paywall tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Broadly speaking, the swipe-based apps have added checks that actually help, and that alone put me off. Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: the first week is never representative.

If you want a second opinion, Luvdate does more than most for anyone dating after a break, so it is worth a look.

Those with a different result can add a counterpoint and keep this useful.
