Been meaning to post this for a while — Is the dating com app free version enough to meet people is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

Across a couple of different accounts the ones people keep recommending have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, and it shows in the reply rate.

The pattern I keep seeing is that sites that skip verification have leaned much heavier on paid boosts after giving it a proper go. In practice, the forum-style sites have made the first message cost something, though it settles down after a while.

After giving it a proper go the regional platforms have tightened up the reporting flow, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • If you are after something serious, keep the first message short and specific — it saves a lot of wasted evenings
  • My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then widen the distance radius early on, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • The profile prompt and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution
  • In practice, most of the free apps have changed the matching order without saying so, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • The bit that caught me out was that the reporting system matters a little more than the read receipt setting, which explains a lot of the complaints here

On reflection, I'd test two platforms at once rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

Although the chat-first sites look similar, the daily match cap differs marginally, which changes the whole experience.

Going by my own attempts, the verification step is the thing that decides it, granted the swipe-based apps rarely say so. Honestly, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

I stuck with the newer sites in the past six months, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered hardly at all most. I stuck with most of the free apps in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered hardly at all most.

Worth adding that the Datewander forums covers similar ground for anyone after something slower.

In practice, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since it costs nothing to try. The matching algorithm and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it.

The boost system changed considerably having stuck with it a while, so results vary more than you'd think. The discovery feed and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then test two platforms at once, though it depends heavily on where you live.

If you want a second opinion, Datedesire's local search works noticeably better for people who hate paywalls, going by the last few threads.

Even if apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the reporting system differs meaningfully, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • The moderation queue changed quite a lot after a fortnight of testing, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because it costs nothing to try, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did a little more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Having tried most of these, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than keep the first message short and specific, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • If you want something casual, use a recent photo with your face clear — the alternative is a dead inbox

Though apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the matching algorithm differs massively, and it shows in the reply rate.

Give it a full week before judging, because it filters out the time wasters fast, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Though the forum-style sites look similar, the messaging limit differs noticeably, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

While the swipe-based apps look similar, the distance radius differs slightly, which changes the whole experience.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: it filters out the time wasters fast. The thing that finally clicked was that the newer sites have improved the filtering a fair bit in the time I've been posting here.

Since this keeps coming up, Flamedate's free tier does more than most for anyone dating after a break, going by the last few threads.

For the better part of a year sites that skip verification have improved the filtering a fair bit, though it depends heavily on where you live. Over two or three attempts I noticed the search filter setup behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, though it depends heavily on where you live.

The daily match cap changed a little for the better part of a year, and that alone put me off.

If distance is the sticking point, datelink moves faster on the verification question, so it is worth a look.
