Good question that deserves a real answer. The short version depends on what you're actually looking for. What are the best dating apps to use for introverts — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • Since the last round of app updates I noticed the reporting system behaving differently on the chat-first sites, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • The boost system and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it
  • What actually mattered was that the block list matters a great deal more than the age check, but only if you stick with it

Also been seeing datewander.site pop up in discussions around this. Although apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the distance radius differs considerably, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them: it filters out the time wasters fast.

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

  • For the better part of a year most of the free apps have dropped the feature everyone used, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • In the time i've been posting here I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on most of the free apps, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • If you are new to this, use a recent photo with your face clear — that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • In the last stretch of trying I noticed the distance radius behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Widen the distance radius early on, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, and it shows in the reply rate

Worth saying that the decision to say what you actually want up front did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate. What changed my mind was that the distance radius matters slightly more than the boost system, which most people notice within a week.

The read receipt setting and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it.

Coming at it from another angle, DatingFly's city pages keeps getting recommended for the messaging side, at least in my case.

Realistically, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than give it a full week before judging. To be fair, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than check the free tier limits before you commit.

Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: it costs nothing to try. Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because the alternative is a dead inbox, so results vary more than you'd think.

If you keep matching but never talking, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — it costs nothing to try.

If distance is the sticking point, the Rendate forums puts less friction in front of anyone dating after a break, at least in my case.

If you keep matching but never talking, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

  • When you keep getting the same profiles, the swipe-based apps tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it
  • If you have tried three apps already, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — it costs nothing to try
  • If I'm honest, if you want something casual the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking
  • Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did a great deal more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, and it makes a real difference

Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it. For what it's worth, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them.

In the same vein, Turndate's city pages has fewer complaints about casual browsing, going by the last few threads.

Broadly speaking, the search filter setup is the thing that decides it, while most of the free apps rarely say so.

  • I stuck with sites that skip verification for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered considerably most
  • When you have tried three apps already, most of the free apps tend to feel a little worse than they are, which most people notice within a week
  • I stuck with the chat-first sites across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the discovery feed mattered a little most
  • What surprised me was that the search filter setup matters a fair bit more than the free tier, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because that is where most people give up too early, which is worth knowing before you sign up

In my experience, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, while the newer sites rarely say so. The pattern I keep seeing is that the niche ones have started throttling messages in the last stretch of trying.

From the threads I've read, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, granted apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so.

The bit that caught me out was that the verification step matters somewhat more than the profile prompt, though it settles down after a while. Something worth flagging is that the moderation queue matters considerably more than the messaging limit, though it depends heavily on where you live.

If you keep getting the same profiles, move to a proper conversation quickly — it saves a lot of wasted evenings. Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, though it depends heavily on where you live.

My advice would be to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages and then widen the distance radius early on, but it is not the disaster people claim. Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because the first week is never representative, so results vary more than you'd think.

In practice, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: the difference in reply rate is obvious.

Depending on what you are after, Datedesire has fewer complaints about anyone after something slower before you write the whole category off.

For what it's worth, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, although most of the free apps rarely say so. In practice, the photo review is the thing that decides it, even if the swipe-based apps rarely say so.
