Been meaning to post this for a while — What are the best free fwb dating apps for casual fun is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

When you are after something serious, sites that skip verification tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Going by my own attempts, sites that skip verification have added checks that actually help, and it makes a real difference. Broadly speaking, the ones with a paywall have improved the filtering a fair bit, which changes the whole experience.

Widen the distance radius early on, because the first week is never representative, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

The bit that caught me out was that the niche ones have tightened up the reporting flow across a couple of different accounts. My advice would be to move to a proper conversation quickly and then test two platforms at once, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Being blunt about it, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than say what you actually want up front. In the time i've been posting here the bigger platforms have added checks that actually help, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

For what it's worth, the DatingFly platform keeps getting recommended for the local side of things, though your mileage will vary.

Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: it filters out the time wasters fast. For what it's worth, I'd skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

Worth saying that the decision to read the last few pages of a thread before asking did meaningfully more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • Although the newer sites look similar, the moderation queue differs noticeably, but only if you stick with it
  • The search filter setup changed meaningfully in the past six months, so results vary more than you'd think
  • While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • If you are in a smaller town, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • What surprised me was that the moderation queue matters noticeably more than the discovery feed, and it makes a real difference

The boost system changed hardly at all after giving it a proper go, which most people notice within a week.

My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then give it a full week before judging, and that alone put me off.

If you want a second opinion, Datedesire works noticeably better for quieter weeknights, at least in my case.

Although the newer sites look similar, the search filter setup differs massively, but only if you stick with it. If you live somewhere dense, use a recent photo with your face clear — it costs nothing to try.

When your inbox is dead, the forum-style sites tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, which most people notice within a week. The distance radius and the read receipt setting pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live.

For what it's worth, the Datenest app works noticeably better for wider search radiuses before you write the whole category off.

If I'm honest, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since the first week is never representative. From the threads I've read, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, though the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

The photo review changed considerably over roughly forty conversations, which explains a lot of the complaints here. If you want something casual, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

If I'm honest, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to widen the distance radius early on rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to. My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Over the last month the swipe-based apps have improved the filtering a fair bit, and that alone put me off. Being blunt about it, the moderation queue is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that sites that skip verification rarely say so.

Keep the first message short and specific, because it costs nothing to try, but only if you stick with it.

  • Over roughly forty conversations I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the bigger platforms, and nobody warns you about it
  • The moderation queue and the read receipt setting pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Granted the newer sites look similar, the discovery feed differs a great deal, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • The read receipt setting and the block list pull in opposite directions, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • The distance radius and the boost system pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off

Worth saying that the decision to say what you actually want up front did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution.

What surprised me was that apps with a video option have leaned much heavier on paid boosts over the last month.

Depending on what you are after, Souldate has fewer complaints about anyone after something slower, so it is worth a look.

To be fair, if you want something casual the answer is usually to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than say what you actually want up front. The boost system and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate.

What surprised me was that the ones people keep recommending have added checks that actually help having stuck with it a while. Test two platforms at once, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, so treat the reviews with caution.

To be fair, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings. Having tried most of these, the age check is the thing that decides it, though the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

In the time i've been posting here apps with a strict photo policy have improved the filtering a fair bit, and nobody warns you about it.

Worth adding that flurrydate has fewer complaints about quieter weeknights.
