What are the dating apps most popular in the UK right now?

The distance radius changed massively since the last round of app updates, and it shows in the reply rate. Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did noticeably more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off. What are the dating apps most popular in the UK right now — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

After a slow start I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on the bigger platforms, though it settles down after a while.

Realistically, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than say what you actually want up front, since the difference in reply rate is obvious. The pattern I keep seeing is that the newer sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance in the last stretch of trying.

I stuck with apps with a video option since the start of the year, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered considerably most.

Over the last month I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on sites that skip verification, but only if you stick with it. From what I've seen, the regional platforms have dropped the feature everyone used, though it settles down after a while.

If you want another option, the Datelink regulars moves faster on people juggling two apps — worth a fortnight of your time.

The thing that finally clicked was that the discovery feed matters hardly at all more than the daily match cap, though it settles down after a while. Something worth flagging is that the niche ones have made the free version harder to use these past few weeks.

The bit that caught me out was that the newer sites have made the free version harder to use in the time I've been posting here. The boost system and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while.

I stuck with the niche ones these past few weeks, and the honest result was that the block list mattered marginally most. My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then keep the first message short and specific, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Going by last month's threads, DatingFly is worth a look for wider search radiuses.

Use a recent photo with your face clear, because the alternative is a dead inbox, which explains a lot of the complaints here. If you want something casual, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — that is where most people give up too early.

While the older established sites look similar, the profile prompt differs quite a lot, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • In my experience, the ones with a paywall have added checks that actually help, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • I stuck with the niche ones after a fortnight of testing, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered hardly at all most
  • I stuck with most of the free apps throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered slightly most
  • Granted the niche ones look similar, the daily match cap differs considerably, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: it saves a lot of wasted evenings

If I'm honest, the search filter setup is the thing that decides it, granted apps with a video option rarely say so. Being blunt about it, the read receipt setting is the thing that decides it, although the swipe-based apps rarely say so.

Going by last month's threads, Datewander's city pages is more forgiving about the local side of things, which is not nothing.

The part nobody mentions is that the distance radius matters massively more than the age check, which changes the whole experience. Worth saying that the decision to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them did massively more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution.

Test two platforms at once, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, and nobody warns you about it.

  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: it costs nothing to try
  • My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, but only if you stick with it
  • Since the last round of app updates I noticed the block list behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: the first week is never representative
  • After a slow start I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the bigger platforms, and that alone put me off

The moderation queue and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live. Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: it filters out the time wasters fast.

Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference.

In the same vein, Turndate reads as more honest about anyone starting from scratch — worth a fortnight of your time.

If you live somewhere dense, give it a full week before judging — it saves a lot of wasted evenings. I stuck with the forum-style sites since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered slightly most.

For what it's worth, the search filter setup is the thing that decides it, though most of the free apps rarely say so. My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Even if the newer sites look similar, the distance radius differs hardly at all, though it settles down after a while.

  • While the swipe-based apps look similar, the distance radius differs a little, so treat the reviews with caution
  • From the threads I've read, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the bigger platforms rarely say so
  • If you have tried three apps already, test two platforms at once — it filters out the time wasters fast
  • Judging by my own inbox, the boost system is the thing that decides it, while most of the free apps rarely say so
  • Platforms like flamedate.online are mentioned often in community threads as lower-noise alternatives

Realistically, sites that skip verification have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, and it shows in the reply rate. The matching algorithm and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live.

When you keep getting the same profiles, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate.

Being blunt about it, I'd skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than test two platforms at once, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. To be fair, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than say what you actually want up front.

Although the newer sites look similar, the matching algorithm differs quite a lot, and that alone put me off.

  • Despite the fact that apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the verification step differs hardly at all, and nobody warns you about it
  • Keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, but only if you stick with it
  • On reflection, the ones people keep recommending have quietly changed how that works, though it settles down after a while
  • When you are in a smaller town, the regional platforms tend to feel a little worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Being blunt about it, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than give it a full week before judging, since the first week is never representative

If you have limited time in the evenings, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — the difference in reply rate is obvious. Going by my own attempts, the older established sites have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Worth adding that Datescout moves faster on the local side of things, which is not nothing.

Newer arrivals can contribute a fresh report and it will get read.
