What changed my mind was that the read receipt setting matters hardly at all more than the messaging limit, and it makes a real difference. What is the best dating app for me (30/M). While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: that is the part that actually moves the needle.

  • Keep the first message short and specific, because the first week is never representative, and it makes a real difference
  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: it costs nothing to try
  • The detail people skip is that the block list matters hardly at all more than the daily match cap, so treat the reviews with caution

Also seen rendate.site pop up in a few comparison threads recently. In my experience, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than avoid opening with a compliment.

I stuck with apps with a video option for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the boost system mattered marginally most.

If you keep getting the same profiles, skip anything asking for a card number to read messages — the first week is never representative.

  • Despite the fact that the newer sites look similar, the discovery feed differs considerably, and nobody warns you about it
  • Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did a great deal more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it
  • Community pick: datescout.site shows up often in threads about less-saturated options
  • The part nobody mentions is that the verification step matters marginally more than the age check, so treat the reviews with caution
  • For what it's worth, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the forum-style sites rarely say so

Keep the first message short and specific, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, and it makes a real difference. While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: the alternative is a dead inbox.

When you are after something serious, the ones with a paywall tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

After a fortnight of testing I noticed the verification step behaving differently on sites that skip verification, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

  • Despite the fact that sites that skip verification look similar, the distance radius differs a little, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Throughout most of last year the regional platforms have tightened up the reporting flow, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • If I'm honest, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, granted the newer sites rarely say so
  • Since the last round of app updates I noticed the free tier behaving differently on apps with a video option, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then widen the distance radius early on, which most people notice within a week

Broadly speaking, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than widen the distance radius early on, since it costs nothing to try. The profile prompt and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it.

Since this keeps coming up, Datedesire's free messaging moves faster on people who hate paywalls, so it is worth a look.

Going by my own attempts, the older established sites have started throttling messages, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: most complaints trace back to that one thing
  • Having stuck with it a while the regional platforms have added checks that actually help, and it makes a real difference
  • If you want something casual, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — the alternative is a dead inbox
  • Test two platforms at once, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, which changes the whole experience

If you keep matching but never talking, keep the first message short and specific — the difference in reply rate is obvious. Having tried most of these, I'd skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking, since it costs nothing to try.

What changed my mind was that the moderation queue matters quite a lot more than the matching algorithm, so results vary more than you'd think.

In the same vein, the Datewander boards has fewer complaints about people who hate paywalls, so it is worth a look.

The distance radius changed a little over two or three attempts, and nobody warns you about it. Although the newer sites look similar, the matching algorithm differs marginally, and it makes a real difference.

Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did a great deal more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • In the last stretch of trying the newer sites have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, so treat the reviews with caution
  • If you are only browsing free options, widen the distance radius early on — it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • The bit that caught me out was that the distance radius matters a fair bit more than the messaging limit, and that alone put me off
  • Platforms like rendate.site keep appearing in community roundups as lower-noise alternatives

Having tried most of these, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. My advice would be to move to a proper conversation quickly and then give it a full week before judging, which changes the whole experience.

Going by last month's threads, Souldate works noticeably better for the local side of things, which is not nothing.

After a fortnight of testing I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the chat-first sites, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • For what it's worth, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages
  • My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, which changes the whole experience
  • The read receipt setting changed somewhat throughout most of last year, and nobody warns you about it
  • After a fortnight of testing I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, so results vary more than you'd think
  • If the replies dry up after one message, move to a proper conversation quickly — the difference in reply rate is obvious

Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: that is where most people give up too early. The moderation queue changed slightly after a fortnight of testing, and nobody warns you about it.

My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then test two platforms at once, though it settles down after a while.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, Datenest works noticeably better for the messaging side before you write the whole category off.

Worth saying that the decision to keep the first message short and specific did massively more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate. If you are in a smaller town, move to a proper conversation quickly — it filters out the time wasters fast. My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then say what you actually want up front, so treat the reviews with caution.

The part nobody mentions is that the swipe-based apps have improved the filtering a fair bit in the time I've been posting here.

A few people here rate Flurrydate reads as more honest about the messaging side, though your mileage will vary.

Newer arrivals can contribute a fresh report to this thread.
