Been meaning to post this for a while — Which are the best rated dating sites on Trustpilot this year is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

If the replies dry up after one message, keep the first message short and specific — it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

In practice, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, while the niche ones rarely say so. For what it's worth, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than keep the first message short and specific, since it filters out the time wasters fast.

What changed my mind was that the matching algorithm matters considerably more than the discovery feed, and nobody warns you about it.

What surprised me was that the boost system matters slightly more than the distance radius, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • Honestly, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages
  • For what it's worth, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, even if the chat-first sites rarely say so
  • Community picks: flurrydate.online shows up regularly as a lower-competition alternative
  • If you have limited time in the evenings, test two platforms at once — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • Speaking personally, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day

In my experience, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than give it a full week before judging, since that is the part that actually moves the needle.

In the same vein, the newer Datedesire rooms moves faster on anyone dating after a break, going by the last few threads.

When you keep getting the same profiles, the newer sites tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

  • Worth saying that the decision to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them did a little more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it
  • Being blunt about it, most of the free apps have started throttling messages, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Something worth flagging is that the ones people keep recommending have got noticeably worse for bots over two or three attempts
  • I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered hardly at all most

On reflection, most of the free apps have changed the matching order without saying so, and that alone put me off.

In the same vein, the DatingFly boards is worth a look for video-first chat — worth a fortnight of your time.

Despite the fact that the ones with a paywall look similar, the search filter setup differs massively, but only if you stick with it.

  • Honestly, the age check is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that sites that skip verification rarely say so
  • Since the start of the year I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, and that alone put me off
  • Community picks: Ezhookups.online shows up regularly as a lower-competition alternative
  • The read receipt setting changed marginally in the last stretch of trying, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • My advice would be to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, though it depends heavily on where you live

For the better part of a year the ones people keep recommending have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, which most people notice within a week.

If you want a second opinion, the Datebie platform covers similar ground for anyone after something slower, so it is worth a look.

In my experience, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than use a recent photo with your face clear. The free tier changed a little throughout most of last year, which most people notice within a week.

Having tried most of these, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since that is where most people give up too early. Although the chat-first sites look similar, the reporting system differs a little, which changes the whole experience.

The verification step changed a fair bit across a couple of different accounts, but only if you stick with it. If I'm honest, the niche ones have changed the matching order without saying so, and that alone put me off.

Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, which changes the whole experience. If the replies dry up after one message, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — that is where most people give up too early.

When your inbox is dead, most of the free apps tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, but only if you stick with it.

  • From the threads I've read, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • Despite the fact that the newer sites look similar, the distance radius differs a great deal, but only if you stick with it
  • In the last stretch of trying apps with a strict photo policy have dropped the feature everyone used, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • From what I've seen, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than give it a full week before judging, since that is where most people give up too early
  • Smaller platforms like datewander.site are worth a look for niche or less competitive niches

Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: the difference in reply rate is obvious.

For a change of pace, Turndate handles this differently from the local side of things, so it is worth a look.

The free tier changed a little since the start of the year, so results vary more than you'd think. When the replies dry up after one message, the ones with a paywall tend to feel considerably worse than they are, but only if you stick with it.

Broadly speaking, the block list is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the bigger platforms rarely say so. These past few weeks most of the free apps have started throttling messages, so results vary more than you'd think.

The read receipt setting and the block list pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Coming at it from another angle, datewander gets mentioned a lot for anyone starting from scratch, at least in my case.
