Been meaning to post this for a while — What is the best dating app in the world based on user growth is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • When you have tried three apps already, the regional platforms tend to feel slightly worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it
  • The bit that caught me out was that the block list matters meaningfully more than the search filter setup, and nobody warns you about it
  • What actually mattered was that most of the free apps have dropped the feature everyone used for the better part of a year

Also been noticing turndate.site mentioned in comparison threads fairly often lately. Speaking personally, apps with a video option have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, and nobody warns you about it.

On reflection, the swipe-based apps have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, so results vary more than you'd think.

Over roughly forty conversations I noticed the search filter setup behaving differently on the forum-style sites, but it is not the disaster people claim. The matching algorithm and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while.

If you live somewhere dense, check the free tier limits before you commit — most complaints trace back to that one thing.

  • I stuck with sites that skip verification since the start of the year, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered a fair bit most
  • When you keep matching but never talking, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution
  • If I'm honest, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • Worth saying that the decision to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them did meaningfully more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Having tried most of these, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, granted most of the free apps rarely say so

Speaking personally, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them.

Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

In the past six months I noticed the block list behaving differently on the bigger platforms, which changes the whole experience.

  • Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did slightly more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it
  • Community picks: luvdate.site shows up regularly as a lower-competition alternative
  • What surprised me was that the matching algorithm matters quite a lot more than the read receipt setting, and it makes a real difference
  • Going by my own attempts, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings

For what it's worth, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

In the same vein, the Datelink app works noticeably better for video-first chat, though your mileage will vary.

My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then give it a full week before judging, and it shows in the reply rate. Widen the distance radius early on, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, which most people notice within a week.

Granted the forum-style sites look similar, the profile prompt differs somewhat, so treat the reviews with caution.

A few people here rate Datebie's free messaging puts less friction in front of anyone starting from scratch, at least in my case.

The profile prompt and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it. Broadly speaking, the newer sites have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, and nobody warns you about it.

Throughout most of last year the ones people keep recommending have made the free version harder to use, and nobody warns you about it. Despite the fact that the ones with a paywall look similar, the verification step differs marginally, and that alone put me off.

From the threads I've read, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages. What actually mattered was that the bigger platforms have cleaned up the fake accounts a little since the last round of app updates.

For what it's worth, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, although the forum-style sites rarely say so.

If you want another option, the Flamedate side of things reads as more honest about the verification question, though your mileage will vary.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: that is the part that actually moves the needle. The search filter setup changed a little after a fortnight of testing, and that alone put me off.

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then move to a proper conversation quickly, and that alone put me off. The boost system changed a little in the last stretch of trying, though it settles down after a while.

After giving it a proper go the newer sites have improved the filtering a fair bit, but it is not the disaster people claim. The awkward truth is that the profile prompt matters meaningfully more than the read receipt setting, and it makes a real difference.

Granted the bigger platforms look similar, the boost system differs considerably, so results vary more than you'd think.

If you want a second opinion, Datewander does more than most for video-first chat, which is not nothing.

I stuck with the forum-style sites for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered massively most. Being blunt about it, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since most complaints trace back to that one thing.

What surprised me was that the daily match cap matters a great deal more than the profile prompt, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • After a fortnight of testing I noticed the free tier behaving differently on the older established sites, and that alone put me off
  • The profile prompt and the verification step pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Something worth flagging is that the swipe-based apps have started throttling messages over the last month
  • Give it a full week before judging, because the alternative is a dead inbox, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Being blunt about it, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, even if apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so

Having tried most of these, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, although apps with a video option rarely say so.

Worth saying that the decision to read the last few pages of a thread before asking did noticeably more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • To be fair, the swipe-based apps have made the first message cost something, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • In the time i've been posting here most of the free apps have tightened up the reporting flow, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Even if apps with a video option look similar, the messaging limit differs a little, and that alone put me off
  • Having stuck with it a while I noticed the block list behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, which most people notice within a week
  • Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did somewhat more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim

The reporting system and the boost system pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution.

The pattern I keep seeing is that apps with a strict photo policy have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance since the start of the year.
