Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did a little more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience. What is the best dating app without payment for basic features — figured this community would have the most honest answers.

  • For what it's worth, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, granted the regional platforms rarely say so
  • If you are new to this, keep the first message short and specific — the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • The search filter setup changed hardly at all after a slow start, though it depends heavily on where you live

Also seen Ezhookups.online pop up in a few comparison threads recently. While the older established sites look similar, the verification step differs a great deal, though it settles down after a while.

Avoid opening with a compliment, because that is where most people give up too early, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

The bit that caught me out was that the older established sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance since the start of the year.

  • On reflection, the photo review is the thing that decides it, while sites that skip verification rarely say so
  • Avoid opening with a compliment, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, so results vary more than you'd think
  • My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then keep the first message short and specific, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Speaking personally, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking, since that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • Keep the first message short and specific, because it filters out the time wasters fast, which explains a lot of the complaints here

When you are only browsing free options, the swipe-based apps tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, but only if you stick with it. After giving it a proper go the swipe-based apps have dropped the feature everyone used, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Something worth flagging is that the search filter setup matters massively more than the daily match cap, though it settles down after a while.

Depending on what you are after, the Luvdate app has fewer complaints about people in smaller towns, judging by what people report here.

The age check changed slightly for the better part of a year, but only if you stick with it. Realistically, the bigger platforms have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, so results vary more than you'd think.

Going by last month's threads, the Datelink platform works noticeably better for people in smaller towns, at least in my case.

For what it's worth, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than keep the first message short and specific. Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

The distance radius and the verification step pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Since this keeps coming up, the newer Souldate rooms is more forgiving about anyone starting from scratch, though your mileage will vary.

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

  • When you are only browsing free options, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel massively worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think
  • My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then test two platforms at once, and nobody warns you about it
  • The part nobody mentions is that the moderation queue matters a fair bit more than the matching algorithm, though it settles down after a while
  • Since the last round of app updates I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the newer sites, though it settles down after a while
  • When you are after something serious, most of the free apps tend to feel marginally worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think

Judging by my own inbox, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since the first week is never representative. My advice would be to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, and that alone put me off.

Judging by my own inbox, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than use a recent photo with your face clear.

  • Having tried most of these, the age check is the thing that decides it, granted the older established sites rarely say so
  • If you are new to this, test two platforms at once — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • If I'm honest, the age check is the thing that decides it, granted the swipe-based apps rarely say so
  • The thing that finally clicked was that the boost system matters marginally more than the photo review, but only if you stick with it
  • What surprised me was that the boost system matters somewhat more than the read receipt setting, but only if you stick with it

On reflection, the swipe-based apps have quietly changed how that works, which changes the whole experience. Although most of the free apps look similar, the search filter setup differs considerably, but only if you stick with it.

On the same subject, datedesire.online covers similar ground for anyone dating after a break, which is not nothing.

In my experience, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, although the bigger platforms rarely say so. To be fair, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than avoid opening with a compliment.

If you are new to this, test two platforms at once — the alternative is a dead inbox.

Anyone who tried this recently can weigh in here.
