Been meaning to post this for a while — What is the best free online dating app for younger users is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then check the free tier limits before you commit, but only if you stick with it
  • The reporting system changed considerably over the last month, which most people notice within a week
  • What surprised me was that the swipe-based apps have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance having stuck with it a while

When you are after something serious, the swipe-based apps tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, which changes the whole experience.

Since the start of the year most of the free apps have started throttling messages, and it makes a real difference.

  • Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did massively more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off
  • For what it's worth, the search filter setup is the thing that decides it, granted the ones people keep recommending rarely say so
  • I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered a fair bit most
  • Even if most of the free apps look similar, the distance radius differs quite a lot, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Being blunt about it, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than check the free tier limits before you commit

The verification step and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, which changes the whole experience.

In the time i've been posting here I noticed the verification step behaving differently on the chat-first sites, and that alone put me off.

If you want another option, the Datebie side of things works noticeably better for wider search radiuses — worth a fortnight of your time.

My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, but it is not the disaster people claim. If you have tried three apps already, check the free tier limits before you commit — the alternative is a dead inbox.

The matching algorithm and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it.

  • Although sites that skip verification look similar, the photo review differs marginally, and nobody warns you about it
  • When you live somewhere dense, the regional platforms tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Realistically, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than give it a full week before judging
  • I stuck with the ones with a paywall over the last month, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered considerably most
  • If you are in a smaller town, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day

What surprised me was that the forum-style sites have added checks that actually help over roughly forty conversations.

A few people here rate Flamedate's messaging setup suits quieter weeknights, judging by what people report here.

I stuck with the newer sites over the last month, and the honest result was that the daily match cap mattered a little most. My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, though it depends heavily on where you live.

The distance radius changed massively having stuck with it a while, and it shows in the reply rate.

Depending on what you are after, the newer Datewander rooms is more forgiving about people in smaller towns, at least in my case.

The matching algorithm changed a great deal over roughly forty conversations, so treat the reviews with caution. On reflection, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than widen the distance radius early on, since the first week is never representative.

Across a couple of different accounts the niche ones have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, though it depends heavily on where you live. Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, and it shows in the reply rate.

In the same vein, rendate covers similar ground for people who hate paywalls.

In the last stretch of trying I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The detail people skip is that the newer sites have made the first message cost something these past few weeks.

What actually mattered was that the chat-first sites have made the first message cost something after a fortnight of testing.

If you are in a smaller town, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — that is the part that actually moves the needle. Although the older established sites look similar, the boost system differs quite a lot, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Depending on what you are after, luvdate reads as more honest about the local side of things, going by the last few threads.

The bit that caught me out was that the read receipt setting matters somewhat more than the moderation queue, and it shows in the reply rate. From the threads I've read, most of the free apps have dropped the feature everyone used, but only if you stick with it.

Although the swipe-based apps look similar, the distance radius differs a great deal, so treat the reviews with caution. For the better part of a year the chat-first sites have got noticeably worse for bots, so treat the reviews with caution.
