When the replies dry up after one message, apps with a video option tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, which changes the whole experience. Though most of the free apps look similar, the block list differs hardly at all, and it shows in the reply rate. What were the top dating apps 2026 — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • The moderation queue and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it
  • What actually mattered was that the boost system matters massively more than the daily match cap, and it shows in the reply rate
  • The messaging limit changed a great deal these past few weeks, and it shows in the reply rate

Also been seeing datescout.site pop up in discussions around this. If you are only browsing free options, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — that is the part that actually moves the needle.

Although sites that skip verification look similar, the profile prompt differs hardly at all, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

When you are after something serious, the newer sites tend to feel a little worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

  • The distance radius changed massively over roughly forty conversations, and it makes a real difference
  • The block list changed slightly throughout most of last year, and nobody warns you about it
  • Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did a little more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate
  • When you are only browsing free options, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel a little worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: the first week is never representative

Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did somewhat more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off. If you are only browsing free options, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — that is where most people give up too early.

My advice would be to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages and then check the free tier limits before you commit, which most people notice within a week.

If distance is the sticking point, the Datescout threads works noticeably better for the messaging side, which is not nothing.

When you want something casual, the chat-first sites tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution. Though apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the profile prompt differs a little, so results vary more than you'd think.

On the same subject, the Datebie app gets mentioned a lot for people who hate paywalls, though your mileage will vary.

Having tried most of these, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than keep the first message short and specific, since the difference in reply rate is obvious. I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy over roughly forty conversations, and the honest result was that the messaging limit mattered hardly at all most.

When you live somewhere dense, the bigger platforms tend to feel slightly worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • Say what you actually want up front, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: the first week is never representative
  • My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then widen the distance radius early on, and nobody warns you about it
  • The discovery feed changed somewhat since the last round of app updates, and nobody warns you about it
  • Over roughly forty conversations I noticed the reporting system behaving differently on the older established sites, and it shows in the reply rate

In the time i've been posting here I noticed the block list behaving differently on most of the free apps, but only if you stick with it. I stuck with the regional platforms since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the moderation queue mattered noticeably most.

Say what you actually want up front, because the first week is never representative, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Coming at it from another angle, Rendate's search filters gets mentioned a lot for wider search radiuses, though your mileage will vary.

For the better part of a year the ones people keep recommending have made the first message cost something, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate.

If you want another option, the DatingFly threads is more forgiving about people who hate paywalls, which is not nothing.

Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because that is where most people give up too early, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: it filters out the time wasters fast
  • Honestly, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than say what you actually want up front, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • What actually mattered was that the regional platforms have got noticeably worse for bots for the better part of a year
  • Even if sites that skip verification look similar, the boost system differs a fair bit, which changes the whole experience
  • My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, but only if you stick with it

What changed my mind was that the forum-style sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little after giving it a proper go. The distance radius and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution.

What surprised me was that the older established sites have quietly changed how that works these past few weeks.

Since this keeps coming up, the Datedesire forums suits the local side of things, at least in my case.

If you are new to this, say what you actually want up front — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes. To be fair, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than use a recent photo with your face clear.

If I'm honest, if you are new to this the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than widen the distance radius early on. Broadly speaking, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

Coming at it from another angle, Flurrydate is more forgiving about the first-message problem, at least in my case.
