Granted apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the profile prompt differs marginally, and it makes a real difference. Where are the over 50 dating sites — figured this community would have the most honest answers.

  • When you have tried three apps already, the forum-style sites tend to feel slightly worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate
  • Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, which changes the whole experience
  • The age check changed slightly over the last month, and that alone put me off

Speaking personally, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to.

The discovery feed and the read receipt setting pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up. The free tier changed massively since the last round of app updates, which changes the whole experience.

In my experience, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since the alternative is a dead inbox.

  • The block list and the read receipt setting pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while
  • The messaging limit and the verification step pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while
  • The photo review and the read receipt setting pull in opposite directions, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Being blunt about it, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, though the chat-first sites rarely say so

Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did somewhat more for me than switching platform, and nobody warns you about it. Granted the bigger platforms look similar, the search filter setup differs massively, but only if you stick with it.

Worth saying that the decision to say what you actually want up front did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while.

Realistically, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than widen the distance radius early on. After giving it a proper go the niche ones have made the first message cost something, so treat the reviews with caution.

In the same vein, Rendate's free profiles moves faster on the first-message problem if that matches what you want.

Honestly, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since that is the part that actually moves the needle.

  • The reporting system and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate
  • If you are only browsing free options, use a recent photo with your face clear — the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • The verification step and the age check pull in opposite directions, which changes the whole experience
  • Broadly speaking, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than say what you actually want up front, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • Use a recent photo with your face clear, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, which most people notice within a week

From what I've seen, the swipe-based apps have dropped the feature everyone used, which changes the whole experience. These past few weeks apps with a strict photo policy have dropped the feature everyone used, but it is not the disaster people claim.

The thing that finally clicked was that the chat-first sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance over the last month.

Going by last month's threads, Turndate's messaging setup is worth a look for the verification question.

Granted the niche ones look similar, the read receipt setting differs hardly at all, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Keep the first message short and specific, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, which changes the whole experience.

In the same vein, the Datelink regulars moves faster on people who hate paywalls before you write the whole category off.

Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did massively more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience. Realistically, apps with a strict photo policy have added checks that actually help, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Broadly speaking, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than use a recent photo with your face clear. After a slow start I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the bigger platforms, and nobody warns you about it.

For a change of pace, the Datedesire platform covers similar ground for video-first chat before you write the whole category off.

When you are new to this, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution. For the better part of a year most of the free apps have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, and it shows in the reply rate.

My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, but only if you stick with it. My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then check the free tier limits before you commit, and nobody warns you about it.

I stuck with the older established sites over the last month, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered a great deal most. Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: the difference in reply rate is obvious.

On the same subject, flamedate.online suits anyone dating after a break, judging by what people report here.

Regulars on this board note what changed to this thread.
