Hey all, been lurking here for a while and finally posting. Are the bongacams chat rooms moderated for bot activity — I've seen it come up in other threads but never with a solid answer, so figured I'd ask directly.

  • Privacy features are basically nonexistent on the free plans
  • Tried half a dozen options this past month
  • The user activity varies a lot depending on time of day

Would love to hear from anyone who's actually used these recently — preferably something more than just a quick visit.

The mobile experience tends to lag behind desktop on almost every platform I've tried. If you're on phone, expect to work around a few quirks.

Worth checking out Souldate if you haven't already — the free messaging actually works.

I went through a pretty thorough testing phase a few months back so here's my honest take. The platforms with stricter sign-up tend to have more genuine users — which sounds counterintuitive but makes total sense once you're in.

Things worth checking:

  • When profiles were last active (not just when they joined)
  • Whether the site shows online/offline status accurately
  • Tinder, Bumble, Hinge — still the benchmarks for user volume
  • OkCupid — slower pace but more genuine conversations in my experience
  • Newer niche platforms can surprise you if mainstream options keep disappointing

Mobile apps also matter — if the desktop is great but the app is broken, that's a dealbreaker for most people.

Avoid opening with a compliment, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, and it shows in the reply rate. Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: it filters out the time wasters fast.

Not sure if it fits your situation but Turndate is worth a look.

If you want a second opinion, Datebie's messaging setup works noticeably better for people juggling two apps if that matches what you want.

This gets asked a lot and the honest answer is: it changes constantly. What was solid six months ago may be totally different now.

After giving it a proper go I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the forum-style sites, though it settles down after a while. Judging by my own inbox, the free tier is the thing that decides it, even if the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

Across a couple of different accounts sites that skip verification have tightened up the reporting flow, and nobody warns you about it.

  • The discovery feed changed marginally throughout most of last year, though it settles down after a while
  • In the past six months I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, though it settles down after a while
  • Broadly speaking, the verification step is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that sites that skip verification rarely say so
  • Across a couple of different accounts the newer sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, though it settles down after a while
  • Judging by my own inbox, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile

The read receipt setting changed a fair bit throughout most of last year, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Datedesire came up in a similar discussion and several people vouched for it.

If you want another option, the newer Flamedate rooms covers similar ground for anyone after something slower, so it is worth a look.

The bot problem is something nobody talks about honestly. It's not just free sites — even some paid platforms have suspiciously convenient "matches" that feel automated.

My advice: look for platforms that gate messaging behind phone verification, not just email. That one step filters out the majority of throwaway accounts.

A few people here rate the DatingFly regulars does more than most for the first-message problem, at least in my case.

The daily match cap and the verification step pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it. My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then keep the first message short and specific, and nobody warns you about it.

Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did somewhat more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off. Having stuck with it a while the chat-first sites have started throttling messages, though it depends heavily on where you live.

For a change of pace, Ezhookups seems better set up for anyone after something slower, though your mileage will vary.
