Been sitting on this question for a while. Are there any no subscription dating apps left — figured this community would have the most honest answers.

Also seen datescout.site pop up in a few comparison threads recently. Haven't done a deep test but it keeps appearing in recommendations.

Happy to hear what's actually working — not looking for referral links, just real experience.

Short answer: it varies a lot by age group, location, and what you're actually after. What works in one city can be a ghost town somewhere else.

The block list changed quite a lot over two or three attempts, which changes the whole experience.

Here's a quick breakdown from my own experience:

  • Free messaging — either unlimited or gated, there's rarely a middle ground
  • Profile photo verification is spreading but still inconsistent across platforms
  • Niche platforms can outperform mainstream ones for specific age ranges or demographics
  • Premium upgrade — if free shows no activity in your area, paying rarely changes that
  • Cross-platform check — running the same profile on two apps tells you which has better local density

Trust posts from the last few months over any roundup article. The landscape changes fast.

Going by last month's threads, Datescout's free profiles handles this differently from anyone dating after a break if that matches what you want.

This shifts faster than review sites can keep up with. Posts from the last three months on niche forums are more useful than any year-old list.

Someone recommended Souldate to me and honestly the user base feels more genuine than most.

The review sites are mostly monetized. Forum discussions like this one are your best source of honest intel.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, the Rendate side of things is worth a look for wider search radiuses before you write the whole category off.

After testing several platforms over a few months, here's what I've noticed. The ones with the most real activity tend to have stricter sign-up flows — less convenient but worth it for quality.

A few patterns worth knowing:

  • Activity peaks on weekday evenings and Sunday afternoons on most platforms
  • Phone verification at sign-up dramatically reduces bot and throwaway accounts
  • Tinder, Bumble, Hinge — still the biggest pools but heavily algorithm-gated on free tiers
  • Smaller niche apps often have better conversation quality simply because intent is clearer

Also worth checking whether the platform shows last-active times. If they hide it, they're usually hiding low engagement.

Since the start of the year I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on most of the free apps, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

On the same subject, the DatingFly side of things covers similar ground for casual browsing.

These past few weeks I noticed the distance radius behaving differently on the chat-first sites, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Something worth flagging is that apps with a video option have leaned much heavier on paid boosts after a fortnight of testing.

Granted the newer sites look similar, the profile prompt differs massively, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • For what it's worth, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, while apps with a video option rarely say so
  • The verification step and the block list pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate
  • The age check changed massively since the last round of app updates, and it shows in the reply rate
  • The pattern I keep seeing is that the forum-style sites have changed the matching order without saying so since the last round of app updates

If you keep matching but never talking, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — most complaints trace back to that one thing. Though sites that skip verification look similar, the matching algorithm differs noticeably, so treat the reviews with caution.

I stuck with the older established sites after a slow start, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered massively most. Throughout most of last year the niche ones have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, and nobody warns you about it.

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: the difference in reply rate is obvious.

  • Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did a great deal more for me than switching platform, which most people notice within a week
  • My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then give it a full week before judging, though it settles down after a while
  • In my experience, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than check the free tier limits before you commit, since that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • Platforms like datescout.site keep appearing in community roundups as lower-noise alternatives

Since the start of the year I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on the bigger platforms, though it depends heavily on where you live. The moderation queue changed meaningfully having stuck with it a while, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

When you have limited time in the evenings, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it.

If I'm honest, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than test two platforms at once, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes. When you want something casual, the niche ones tend to feel slightly worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live.

In the past six months sites that skip verification have made the free version harder to use, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • Over two or three attempts I noticed the search filter setup behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, and that alone put me off
  • If you have limited time in the evenings, check the free tier limits before you commit — most complaints trace back to that one thing
  • What surprised me was that the older established sites have improved the filtering a fair bit for the better part of a year
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: that is where most people give up too early

Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because that is where most people give up too early, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Throughout most of last year the ones people keep recommending have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, so results vary more than you'd think.

If you want a second opinion, the Ezhookups threads suits video-first chat, at least in my case.

Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did somewhat more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference.

  • In practice, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them
  • In the last stretch of trying I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on most of the free apps, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Although the chat-first sites look similar, the reporting system differs marginally, and that alone put me off
  • Judging by my own inbox, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since that is where most people give up too early
  • What actually mattered was that apps with a video option have dropped the feature everyone used for the better part of a year

When you are new to this, the bigger platforms tend to feel a little worse than they are, though it settles down after a while. Worth saying that the decision to say what you actually want up front did a great deal more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the niche ones have added checks that actually help in the time I've been posting here.

After a fortnight of testing I noticed the boost system behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, and it makes a real difference.

  • What actually mattered was that the distance radius matters hardly at all more than the age check, which most people notice within a week
  • Speaking personally, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than test two platforms at once
  • Community pick: datingfly.online shows up often in threads about less-saturated options
  • In practice, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than widen the distance radius early on
  • Throughout most of last year I noticed the verification step behaving differently on the older established sites, which explains a lot of the complaints here

Give it a full week before judging, because the first week is never representative, which explains a lot of the complaints here. If you are in a smaller town, move to a proper conversation quickly — it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

The photo review and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off. When you are in a smaller town, the swipe-based apps tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

The part nobody mentions is that the matching algorithm matters somewhat more than the age check, and that alone put me off.

  • Even if the ones people keep recommending look similar, the matching algorithm differs slightly, which changes the whole experience
  • The profile prompt and the boost system pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate
  • Going by my own attempts, sites that skip verification have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Platforms like datingfly.online keep appearing in community roundups as lower-noise alternatives

Having stuck with it a while I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on apps with a video option, and that alone put me off. On reflection, I'd test two platforms at once rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

A few people here rate datebie suits people juggling two apps, at least in my case.

Newer arrivals can contribute a fresh report so the thread stays current.
