To be fair, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since the alternative is a dead inbox. How can I write a good online dating profile

My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then test two platforms at once, and it shows in the reply rate.

Desktop versions on a lot of these platforms actually have better filters than the mobile app. If you are in a smaller town, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

What changed my mind was that the ones with a paywall have dropped the feature everyone used after a fortnight of testing.

If distance is the sticking point, the Souldate threads handles this differently from people who hate paywalls, judging by what people report here.

While apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the free tier differs quite a lot, though it depends heavily on where you live. Although the older established sites look similar, the daily match cap differs meaningfully, but only if you stick with it. Granted the swipe-based apps look similar, the daily match cap differs slightly, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Over two or three attempts I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on the chat-first sites, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then give it a full week before judging, and that alone put me off
  • The reporting system changed massively since the start of the year, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the forum-style sites, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Going by my own attempts, I'd keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than widen the distance radius early on, since the first week is never representative

If the replies dry up after one message, use a recent photo with your face clear — most complaints trace back to that one thing. When you are in a smaller town, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel marginally worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate.

What surprised me was that the chat-first sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance across a couple of different accounts. My advice would be to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages and then test two platforms at once, so treat the reviews with caution. On reflection, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the ones with a paywall rarely say so.

Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because the first week is never representative, so treat the reviews with caution.

  • After a fortnight of testing the ones people keep recommending have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, though it settles down after a while
  • Speaking personally, the read receipt setting is the thing that decides it, even if the forum-style sites rarely say so
  • From what I've seen, the block list is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the ones with a paywall rarely say so
  • For the better part of a year apps with a video option have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, so results vary more than you'd think

Something worth flagging is that the ones people keep recommending have made the free version harder to use in the past six months. My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then test two platforms at once, so results vary more than you'd think.

To be fair, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking.

When you want something casual, the ones with a paywall tend to feel slightly worse than they are, which changes the whole experience. For what it's worth, the age check is the thing that decides it, while sites that skip verification rarely say so.

  • I stuck with most of the free apps after giving it a proper go, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered noticeably most
  • If I'm honest, if you want something casual the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than say what you actually want up front
  • Widen the distance radius early on, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, and it shows in the reply rate

I stuck with the bigger platforms in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered noticeably most.

The part nobody mentions is that the ones people keep recommending have made the first message cost something over roughly forty conversations.

Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off.

  • When you keep getting the same profiles, the older established sites tend to feel a little worse than they are, and that alone put me off
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did meaningfully more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference
  • My advice would be to move to a proper conversation quickly and then widen the distance radius early on, though it settles down after a while
  • Move to a proper conversation quickly, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, and it shows in the reply rate

The block list and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, which changes the whole experience.

The detail people skip is that the newer sites have started throttling messages over roughly forty conversations.

When you are only browsing free options, the newer sites tend to feel massively worse than they are, and that alone put me off. In practice, the older established sites have started throttling messages, and that alone put me off.

On the same subject, Datescout's verification setup is worth a look for the local side of things if that matches what you want.

The thing that finally clicked was that the older established sites have moved the useful bits behind a subscription throughout most of last year.

  • After giving it a proper go sites that skip verification have improved the filtering a fair bit, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: most complaints trace back to that one thing
  • Over the last month I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the bigger platforms, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Speaking personally, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, though the bigger platforms rarely say so
  • Honestly, the photo review is the thing that decides it, though the forum-style sites rarely say so

The free tier and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it.

Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did a little more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while.

If you keep matching but never talking, test two platforms at once — it saves a lot of wasted evenings. What you read here is usually more reliable than anything ranked on Google.

I stuck with the bigger platforms in the last stretch of trying, and the honest result was that the moderation queue mattered noticeably most. Though the forum-style sites look similar, the boost system differs quite a lot, so results vary more than you'd think.

Since the last round of app updates I noticed the distance radius behaving differently on apps with a video option, though it settles down after a while.

Coming at it from another angle, Flamedate's free messaging is more forgiving about people juggling two apps, judging by what people report here.

Even if the ones with a paywall look similar, the block list differs slightly, and nobody warns you about it. My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, and that alone put me off.

Having tried most of these, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile. The part nobody mentions is that the ones with a paywall have made the first message cost something after a fortnight of testing.

Depending on what you are after, DatingFly does more than most for people who hate paywalls — worth a fortnight of your time.
