Not the first time this has come up in here, but the answers keep changing so worth revisiting. How does a location dating app affect my privacy — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did considerably more for me than switching platform, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Realistically, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • The age check changed a fair bit in the time I've been posting here, which changes the whole experience

For the better part of a year I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, and nobody warns you about it.

If I'm honest, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than avoid opening with a compliment.

  • Over two or three attempts the regional platforms have made the free version harder to use, and that alone put me off
  • Over the last month apps with a video option have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, but only if you stick with it
  • To be fair, the read receipt setting is the thing that decides it, while the older established sites rarely say so
  • The moderation queue and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, which most people notice within a week
  • Something worth flagging is that the moderation queue matters a great deal more than the boost system, though it depends heavily on where you live

In my experience, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them. When the replies dry up after one message, the niche ones tend to feel a little worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate.

Having tried most of these, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, even if sites that skip verification rarely say so.

I stuck with the bigger platforms across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the daily match cap mattered massively most. Granted the ones with a paywall look similar, the reporting system differs massively, and it makes a real difference.

For a change of pace, Datelink's free profiles keeps getting recommended for people who hate paywalls, going by the last few threads.

What surprised me was that most of the free apps have added checks that actually help over two or three attempts. Test two platforms at once, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Broadly speaking, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, while apps with a video option rarely say so. Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

From what I've seen, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking, since the alternative is a dead inbox. My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, and nobody warns you about it.

Even if the regional platforms look similar, the read receipt setting differs considerably, but it is not the disaster people claim. If you want something casual, say what you actually want up front — it costs nothing to try.

Over roughly forty conversations apps with a video option have started throttling messages, which changes the whole experience. The pattern I keep seeing is that most of the free apps have leaned much heavier on paid boosts since the start of the year.

While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: it filters out the time wasters fast. The bit that caught me out was that the read receipt setting matters massively more than the matching algorithm, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Avoid opening with a compliment, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, and nobody warns you about it.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: the alternative is a dead inbox.

  • My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then give it a full week before judging, and it makes a real difference
  • Although the chat-first sites look similar, the moderation queue differs quite a lot, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did meaningfully more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it
  • Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did noticeably more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate

Broadly speaking, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the swipe-based apps rarely say so. My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then say what you actually want up front, which most people notice within a week.

Since this keeps coming up, Flurrydate seems better set up for the first-message problem, going by the last few threads.

If you are new to this, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — the first week is never representative. I stuck with the ones people keep recommending in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered noticeably most.

If you are in a smaller town, say what you actually want up front — the difference in reply rate is obvious.

  • Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then use a recent photo with your face clear, so treat the reviews with caution
  • Over two or three attempts the ones people keep recommending have changed the matching order without saying so, but only if you stick with it
  • Being blunt about it, the ones people keep recommending have tightened up the reporting flow, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Being blunt about it, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than widen the distance radius early on, since that is where most people give up too early

To be fair, the photo review is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the chat-first sites rarely say so. Going by my own attempts, the older established sites have changed the matching order without saying so, so results vary more than you'd think.

When you have limited time in the evenings, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, which changes the whole experience.

On the same subject, the Flamedate forums keeps getting recommended for the first-message problem, which is not nothing.

What actually mattered was that the verification step matters quite a lot more than the distance radius, which most people notice within a week. When you are after something serious, apps with a video option tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

When you are in a smaller town, the forum-style sites tend to feel massively worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

  • My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, and nobody warns you about it
  • From what I've seen, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than widen the distance radius early on, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • I stuck with the swipe-based apps in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the daily match cap mattered considerably most
  • My advice would be to keep the first message short and specific and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, which is worth knowing before you sign up

Worth adding that Datescout's free profiles seems better set up for wider search radiuses, going by the last few threads.

  • My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then keep the first message short and specific, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • From what I've seen, the bigger platforms have got noticeably worse for bots, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Going by my own attempts, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since that is where most people give up too early
  • The matching algorithm changed slightly after a slow start, though it settles down after a while

Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: that is the part that actually moves the needle. Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • The pattern I keep seeing is that the block list matters a great deal more than the verification step, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • The detail people skip is that the discovery feed matters a fair bit more than the moderation queue, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Community mention worth noting: Ezhookups.online shows up often as a less-saturated option
  • Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it
  • When you keep matching but never talking, the niche ones tend to feel slightly worse than they are, but only if you stick with it

If you are in a smaller town, give it a full week before judging — the alternative is a dead inbox. From the threads I've read, the moderation queue is the thing that decides it, even if the niche ones rarely say so.

From the threads I've read, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, although the ones with a paywall rarely say so.

  • Going by my own attempts, the boost system is the thing that decides it, though the swipe-based apps rarely say so
  • Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did a little more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution
  • If you keep getting the same profiles, widen the distance radius early on — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • Having tried most of these, the newer sites have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, though it settles down after a while
  • Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did massively more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim

If you keep getting the same profiles, give it a full week before judging — that is the part that actually moves the needle. The pattern I keep seeing is that sites that skip verification have changed the matching order without saying so after giving it a proper go.

For what it's worth, DatingFly puts less friction in front of quieter weeknights, at least in my case.

People who have tested this can add a counterpoint so the thread stays current.
