Is a facebook hookup easier than using an app?

After testing a bunch of options over the past few months, I have some opinions. The tl;dr: most free tiers are deliberately crippled. Is a facebook hookup easier than using an app — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: it costs nothing to try
  • My advice would be to move to a proper conversation quickly and then report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • From what I've seen, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to

If you keep matching but never talking, test two platforms at once — the difference in reply rate is obvious.

The age check and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

  • In the past six months I noticed the verification step behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, so treat the reviews with caution
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • After giving it a proper go I noticed the search filter setup behaving differently on the forum-style sites, which changes the whole experience
  • Broadly speaking, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, while sites that skip verification rarely say so
  • When you are new to this, apps with a video option tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution

What surprised me was that the boost system matters hardly at all more than the photo review, though it depends heavily on where you live. I stuck with most of the free apps after a fortnight of testing, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered meaningfully most.

While apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the profile prompt differs meaningfully, but it is not the disaster people claim.

If you want a second opinion, Datenest's local search gets mentioned a lot for the messaging side before you write the whole category off.

The distance radius and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while. When you want something casual, the swipe-based apps tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, and it makes a real difference.

On the same subject, the newer Datewander rooms is more forgiving about the first-message problem, going by the last few threads.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them: most complaints trace back to that one thing. I stuck with sites that skip verification across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the moderation queue mattered noticeably most.

What actually mattered was that the swipe-based apps have leaned much heavier on paid boosts after a fortnight of testing.

The block list and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, which changes the whole experience.

  • Broadly speaking, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than say what you actually want up front, since the first week is never representative
  • In the last stretch of trying I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on the chat-first sites, so results vary more than you'd think
  • The matching algorithm changed meaningfully since the start of the year, and nobody warns you about it
  • In the time i've been posting here the newer sites have dropped the feature everyone used, so treat the reviews with caution
  • If you live somewhere dense, skip anything asking for a card number to read messages — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day

Having tried most of these, the read receipt setting is the thing that decides it, while apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so. The matching algorithm and the read receipt setting pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution.

If you are new to this, widen the distance radius early on — it costs nothing to try. What actually mattered was that the daily match cap matters meaningfully more than the verification step, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Speaking personally, sites that skip verification have got noticeably worse for bots, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

These past few weeks I noticed the reporting system behaving differently on the newer sites, but only if you stick with it.

  • Throughout most of last year I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the regional platforms, though it settles down after a while
  • The search filter setup and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Though the swipe-based apps look similar, the discovery feed differs massively, which changes the whole experience
  • I stuck with the newer sites since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered somewhat most
  • The verification step changed a great deal after a fortnight of testing, which explains a lot of the complaints here

Though the newer sites look similar, the reporting system differs noticeably, which changes the whole experience. When you are new to this, the newer sites tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

If distance is the sticking point, the Datebie threads is worth a look for quieter weeknights, so it is worth a look.

Going by my own attempts, the moderation queue is the thing that decides it, even if the swipe-based apps rarely say so. Having stuck with it a while apps with a strict photo policy have made the free version harder to use, and nobody warns you about it.

From the threads I've read, if you are new to this the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight.

A few people here rate Flamedate's free tier is more forgiving about the first-message problem, which is not nothing.

Give it a full week before judging, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, but it is not the disaster people claim. Something worth flagging is that the distance radius matters massively more than the moderation queue, so results vary more than you'd think.

After giving it a proper go I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the older established sites, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • Having stuck with it a while the newer sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, so treat the reviews with caution
  • When you are only browsing free options, the forum-style sites tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, and it makes a real difference
  • Over the last month the niche ones have made the free version harder to use, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Granted the regional platforms look similar, the matching algorithm differs marginally, and it makes a real difference
  • My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, though it settles down after a while

If you keep getting the same profiles, say what you actually want up front — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

A few people here rate luvdate moves faster on people who hate paywalls — worth a fortnight of your time.

Anyone with recent experience can add a counterpoint at any time.
