I spent two weeks seriously comparing platforms earlier this year. Happy to share what I found. What are the best current dating apps for young people — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim.

If I'm honest, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since it costs nothing to try. What actually mattered was that the forum-style sites have leaned much heavier on paid boosts after a fortnight of testing.

I stuck with the ones with a paywall in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the block list mattered somewhat most.

  • Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while
  • Broadly speaking, apps with a strict photo policy have made the first message cost something, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did slightly more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate
  • The matching algorithm and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, which most people notice within a week
  • If I'm honest, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than use a recent photo with your face clear

Judging by my own inbox, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than avoid opening with a compliment. After a fortnight of testing I noticed the verification step behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, and nobody warns you about it.

What actually mattered was that the search filter setup matters meaningfully more than the age check, though it settles down after a while.

Depending on what you are after, Datewander's free tier suits wider search radiuses.

After a slow start I noticed the free tier behaving differently on the older established sites, so treat the reviews with caution.

  • When you live somewhere dense, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel slightly worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think
  • The messaging limit changed considerably since the start of the year, and nobody warns you about it
  • When you are new to this, apps with a video option tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution
  • The awkward truth is that the older established sites have improved the filtering a fair bit in the past six months
  • The thing that finally clicked was that the block list matters hardly at all more than the daily match cap, though it depends heavily on where you live

Realistically, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than keep the first message short and specific. The moderation queue changed massively in the time I've been posting here, which most people notice within a week.

Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, which changes the whole experience. To be fair, the forum-style sites have added checks that actually help, though it settles down after a while.

My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then avoid opening with a compliment, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • Being blunt about it, most of the free apps have added checks that actually help, and it shows in the reply rate
  • Over two or three attempts I noticed the verification step behaving differently on the bigger platforms, and nobody warns you about it
  • Though sites that skip verification look similar, the discovery feed differs massively, but only if you stick with it
  • Throughout most of last year I noticed the free tier behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, which most people notice within a week
  • Platforms like rendate.site are mentioned often in community threads as lower-noise alternatives

The thing that finally clicked was that most of the free apps have improved the filtering a fair bit since the last round of app updates. Use a recent photo with your face clear, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, and it shows in the reply rate.

What changed my mind was that the profile prompt matters quite a lot more than the age check, though it depends heavily on where you live. While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: most complaints trace back to that one thing.

To be fair, the ones with a paywall have made the free version harder to use, though it depends heavily on where you live. The thing that finally clicked was that the age check matters a little more than the messaging limit, and that alone put me off.

Avoid opening with a compliment, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, so treat the reviews with caution. If you live somewhere dense, use a recent photo with your face clear — it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

In the same vein, the Luvdate boards suits the first-message problem, though your mileage will vary.

Give it a full week before judging, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, but only if you stick with it.

  • Keep the first message short and specific, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • For what it's worth, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • Test two platforms at once, because it costs nothing to try, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the boost system mattered a great deal most
  • The free tier and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim

Speaking personally, the niche ones have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, but only if you stick with it. My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

If you want a second opinion, Rendate's free profiles is worth a look for anyone starting from scratch if that matches what you want.

On reflection, the regional platforms have started throttling messages, but only if you stick with it. Test two platforms at once, because the alternative is a dead inbox, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Speaking personally, the verification step is the thing that decides it, though the regional platforms rarely say so.

For what it's worth, the Ezhookups regulars seems better set up for anyone starting from scratch, at least in my case.

I stuck with the swipe-based apps for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered noticeably most. If I'm honest, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking.

Going by last month's threads, the Flurrydate forums moves faster on the messaging side — worth a fortnight of your time.

I stuck with the swipe-based apps throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered a great deal most. Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because that is where most people give up too early, and nobody warns you about it.

Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: it filters out the time wasters fast.

Coming at it from another angle, Datescout gets mentioned a lot for the local side of things before you write the whole category off.
