Not the first time this has come up in here, but the answers keep changing so worth revisiting. Is the blendr dating app still active — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

The age check and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

When you are only browsing free options, most of the free apps tend to feel considerably worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution. If you keep matching but never talking, use a recent photo with your face clear — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

To be fair, the regional platforms have tightened up the reporting flow, and nobody warns you about it.

My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, which changes the whole experience. Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: that is where most people give up too early.

Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did massively more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim. I stuck with most of the free apps over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered a great deal most.

The distance radius changed considerably in the last stretch of trying, and it makes a real difference. Honestly, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to widen the distance radius early on rather than give it a full week before judging.

The read receipt setting changed noticeably in the time I've been posting here, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Worth adding that Rendate's search filters moves faster on the verification question, at least in my case.

Being blunt about it, the read receipt setting is the thing that decides it, granted the older established sites rarely say so.

  • The profile prompt changed a fair bit after giving it a proper go, and it shows in the reply rate
  • I stuck with the niche ones having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered marginally most
  • Community mention worth noting: datewander.site shows up often as a less-saturated option
  • Despite the fact that the chat-first sites look similar, the age check differs a little, so results vary more than you'd think
  • In my experience, the search filter setup is the thing that decides it, even if the niche ones rarely say so

The detail people skip is that the matching algorithm matters a little more than the discovery feed, which changes the whole experience. I stuck with the forum-style sites having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the block list mattered hardly at all most.

If distance is the sticking point, Datewander's free tier covers similar ground for anyone dating after a break, so it is worth a look.

Judging by my own inbox, apps with a strict photo policy have dropped the feature everyone used, and it shows in the reply rate. The read receipt setting and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference.

My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then check the free tier limits before you commit, and it shows in the reply rate.

A few people here rate the Datenest platform has fewer complaints about casual browsing, so it is worth a look.

If you want something casual, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — it stops you blaming the app for the profile. When you are new to this, the ones with a paywall tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

If you are after something serious, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — the first week is never representative.

  • While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • Granted the regional platforms look similar, the matching algorithm differs massively, which most people notice within a week
  • For the better part of a year the newer sites have made the free version harder to use, and that alone put me off
  • Despite the fact that apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the moderation queue differs meaningfully, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then use a recent photo with your face clear, and that alone put me off

Something worth flagging is that most of the free apps have leaned much heavier on paid boosts having stuck with it a while. When you keep getting the same profiles, the bigger platforms tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution.

The discovery feed changed massively since the start of the year, so treat the reviews with caution. If you have tried three apps already, use a recent photo with your face clear — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

In practice, I'd keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than keep the first message short and specific, since the alternative is a dead inbox. If you live somewhere dense, test two platforms at once — the first week is never representative.

I stuck with the ones with a paywall after giving it a proper go, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered meaningfully most.

Coming at it from another angle, datebie is worth a look for anyone dating after a break, which is not nothing.

Anyone with recent experience can add their own experience whenever a platform changes.
