Is the down dating app still popular for quick hookups?

After testing a bunch of options over the past few months, I have some opinions. The tl;dr: most free tiers are deliberately crippled. Is the down dating app still popular for quick hookups — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the newer sites, though it settles down after a while
  • The messaging limit changed quite a lot in the time I've been posting here, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Broadly speaking, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since the alternative is a dead inbox

Also been seeing Ezhookups.online pop up in discussions around this. Test two platforms at once, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, which most people notice within a week.

The profile prompt changed quite a lot having stuck with it a while, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Realistically, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than check the free tier limits before you commit, since the first week is never representative. Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did massively more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live.

I stuck with sites that skip verification over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered quite a lot most. Being blunt about it, the ones with a paywall have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, which changes the whole experience.

Widen the distance radius early on, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, and it makes a real difference.

If you want a second opinion, the Datelink threads keeps getting recommended for the local side of things, though your mileage will vary.

Throughout most of last year I noticed the verification step behaving differently on sites that skip verification, which changes the whole experience. Honestly, the block list is the thing that decides it, granted the older established sites rarely say so.

The search filter setup changed considerably for the better part of a year, but it is not the disaster people claim. The part nobody mentions is that the age check matters hardly at all more than the discovery feed, and that alone put me off.

For what it's worth, the Datescout threads suits video-first chat, which is not nothing.

The discovery feed and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution. Across a couple of different accounts the older established sites have made the free version harder to use, and that alone put me off.

The awkward truth is that the reporting system matters meaningfully more than the verification step, but it is not the disaster people claim. While the ones people keep recommending look similar, the verification step differs considerably, and it makes a real difference.

Judging by my own inbox, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than say what you actually want up front, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. My advice would be to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, so treat the reviews with caution.

If distance is the sticking point, Flamedate puts less friction in front of video-first chat, at least in my case.

The read receipt setting changed a fair bit over two or three attempts, though it depends heavily on where you live. Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: most complaints trace back to that one thing.

Test two platforms at once, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

  • The moderation queue changed slightly having stuck with it a while, which changes the whole experience
  • When you live somewhere dense, the newer sites tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate
  • When your inbox is dead, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate
  • On reflection, the chat-first sites have changed the matching order without saying so, but only if you stick with it
  • If you are only browsing free options, widen the distance radius early on — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: it filters out the time wasters fast. My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Coming at it from another angle, the Rendate forums is worth a look for anyone starting from scratch.

On reflection, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to widen the distance radius early on rather than test two platforms at once. Something worth flagging is that the daily match cap matters quite a lot more than the verification step, and nobody warns you about it.

Going by last month's threads, ezhookups.online reads as more honest about video-first chat, which is not nothing.

People who have tested this can flag anything out of date and it will get read.
