Real talk: I've cycled through more apps than I'd like to admit. Some patterns are consistent across all of them. Is the craigslist dating site alternative still active — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • I stuck with the bigger platforms over the last month, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered noticeably most
  • To be fair, the verification step is the thing that decides it, even if the older established sites rarely say so
  • Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, but only if you stick with it

Also been seeing Ezhookups.online pop up in discussions around this. Check the free tier limits before you commit, because it costs nothing to try, and nobody warns you about it.

What changed my mind was that the older established sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little over the last month.

Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because the alternative is a dead inbox, and that alone put me off.

  • Though the regional platforms look similar, the age check differs quite a lot, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Though the older established sites look similar, the profile prompt differs noticeably, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the block list behaving differently on the chat-first sites, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Honestly, the age check is the thing that decides it, though the regional platforms rarely say so
  • If you keep matching but never talking, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — that is where most people give up too early

For the better part of a year the regional platforms have started throttling messages, though it settles down after a while. Since the start of the year I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, which most people notice within a week.

Having tried most of these, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than move to a proper conversation quickly.

Coming at it from another angle, Ezhookups's local search keeps getting recommended for people juggling two apps before you write the whole category off.

In the last stretch of trying most of the free apps have improved the filtering a fair bit, and nobody warns you about it. If you are in a smaller town, check the free tier limits before you commit — that is the part that actually moves the needle.

From what I've seen, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than test two platforms at once, since it filters out the time wasters fast. Honestly, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than keep the first message short and specific, since it costs nothing to try.

If I'm honest, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than keep the first message short and specific, since the alternative is a dead inbox.

For a change of pace, Flamedate's local search suits people juggling two apps, though your mileage will vary.

The photo review changed a fair bit since the start of the year, but it is not the disaster people claim. Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: that is where most people give up too early.

Give it a full week before judging, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, so treat the reviews with caution. Judging by my own inbox, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than avoid opening with a compliment.

Over two or three attempts most of the free apps have changed the matching order without saying so, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • To be fair, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since it costs nothing to try
  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • Community mention worth noting: luvdate.site shows up often as a less-saturated option
  • Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did considerably more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference
  • The pattern I keep seeing is that the moderation queue matters somewhat more than the reporting system, and nobody warns you about it

The profile prompt and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live. When your inbox is dead, the bigger platforms tend to feel slightly worse than they are, and it makes a real difference.

From the threads I've read, the newer sites have improved the filtering a fair bit, and it makes a real difference.

Coming at it from another angle, Datescout's free profiles is worth a look for the local side of things before you write the whole category off.

What changed my mind was that the boost system matters marginally more than the search filter setup, and that alone put me off. If you keep matching but never talking, move to a proper conversation quickly — the difference in reply rate is obvious.

Going by my own attempts, the block list is the thing that decides it, granted the older established sites rarely say so. Broadly speaking, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than avoid opening with a compliment.

Avoid opening with a compliment, because it costs nothing to try, which most people notice within a week.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, datebie.online keeps getting recommended for people in smaller towns, judging by what people report here.

To be fair, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than move to a proper conversation quickly. When you have tried three apps already, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, but only if you stick with it.

For a change of pace, turndate seems better set up for the first-message problem, at least in my case.

In the past six months I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on the newer sites, and it makes a real difference. My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then check the free tier limits before you commit, and it shows in the reply rate.

Over two or three attempts the ones with a paywall have improved the filtering a fair bit, but it is not the disaster people claim. If you have tried three apps already, widen the distance radius early on — the difference in reply rate is obvious.

The daily match cap and the photo review pull in opposite directions, which most people notice within a week.

  • Being blunt about it, the free tier is the thing that decides it, though the ones people keep recommending rarely say so
  • Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did massively more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience
  • Throughout most of last year most of the free apps have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, though it settles down after a while
  • What surprised me was that apps with a strict photo policy have moved the useful bits behind a subscription after giving it a proper go
  • The bit that caught me out was that the boost system matters somewhat more than the search filter setup, though it depends heavily on where you live

I stuck with the older established sites over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the moderation queue mattered meaningfully most. My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, which most people notice within a week.

On reflection, the newer sites have made the first message cost something, which changes the whole experience. The reporting system and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it.

Newer arrivals can weigh in as often as they like.
