Been meaning to post this for a while — Is there a full free dating app with no hidden fees is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

When you keep matching but never talking, the niche ones tend to feel massively worse than they are, though it settles down after a while.

Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while. If you are only browsing free options, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — most complaints trace back to that one thing.

The daily match cap and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, which most people notice within a week. I stuck with the forum-style sites over roughly forty conversations, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered massively most.

Having tried most of these, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than keep the first message short and specific. Going by my own attempts, the moderation queue is the thing that decides it, though apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so.

If you keep matching but never talking, skip anything asking for a card number to read messages — it filters out the time wasters fast. Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

To be fair, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than check the free tier limits before you commit, since that is the part that actually moves the needle. The part nobody mentions is that most of the free apps have made the free version harder to use having stuck with it a while.

What changed my mind was that the ones with a paywall have cleaned up the fake accounts a little these past few weeks. Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, which most people notice within a week.

Judging by my own inbox, the photo review is the thing that decides it, even if the ones with a paywall rarely say so. Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did noticeably more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference.

On the same subject, the DatingFly forums reads as more honest about video-first chat, so it is worth a look.

My advice would be to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages and then report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, which explains a lot of the complaints here. What surprised me was that most of the free apps have tightened up the reporting flow throughout most of last year.

The bit that caught me out was that the bigger platforms have tightened up the reporting flow in the time I've been posting here.

For a change of pace, Souldate suits people juggling two apps, judging by what people report here.

Granted sites that skip verification look similar, the verification step differs a fair bit, so treat the reviews with caution.

  • On reflection, the verification step is the thing that decides it, though apps with a video option rarely say so
  • When you have limited time in the evenings, the ones with a paywall tend to feel marginally worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • If you are new to this, move to a proper conversation quickly — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • These past few weeks I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on the bigger platforms, and that alone put me off
  • What changed my mind was that most of the free apps have improved the filtering a fair bit having stuck with it a while

In practice, the age check is the thing that decides it, though the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

I stuck with the newer sites for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the moderation queue mattered slightly most. When you keep matching but never talking, the niche ones tend to feel considerably worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

In the same vein, Flurrydate handles this differently from wider search radiuses, going by the last few threads.

Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The pattern I keep seeing is that apps with a video option have quietly changed how that works having stuck with it a while.

Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did somewhat more for me than switching platform, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

For a change of pace, Rendate reads as more honest about casual browsing, judging by what people report here.
