Good question that deserves a real answer. The short version depends on what you're actually looking for. Is there a mixed dating app for multi-ethnic singles — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

Also been seeing datingfly.online pop up in discussions around this. The pattern I keep seeing is that the age check matters a fair bit more than the matching algorithm, which changes the whole experience.

Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

The profile prompt and the verification step pull in opposite directions, which explains a lot of the complaints here. In the past six months I noticed the verification step behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, and it makes a real difference.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the niche ones have made the free version harder to use since the last round of app updates.

The messaging limit and the verification step pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up. The discovery feed changed slightly after giving it a proper go, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Though the niche ones look similar, the block list differs a fair bit, and it makes a real difference. Since the start of the year the newer sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, but it is not the disaster people claim.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, Datelink reads as more honest about video-first chat — worth a fortnight of your time.

I stuck with the newer sites after a slow start, and the honest result was that the block list mattered considerably most. The messaging limit changed a little across a couple of different accounts, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did a great deal more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience.

For a change of pace, Datebie keeps getting recommended for anyone after something slower, which is not nothing.

If your inbox is dead, skip anything asking for a card number to read messages — the alternative is a dead inbox. If I'm honest, the free tier is the thing that decides it, even if the chat-first sites rarely say so.

To be fair, if you want something casual the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight.

  • Judging by my own inbox, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • Something worth flagging is that the swipe-based apps have moved the useful bits behind a subscription after giving it a proper go
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • The free tier changed massively over roughly forty conversations, and it shows in the reply rate
  • In the last stretch of trying the older established sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, which changes the whole experience

The matching algorithm and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: the first week is never representative.

In the same vein, Flamedate's city pages is worth a look for quieter weeknights if that matches what you want.

The age check changed hardly at all these past few weeks, and it makes a real difference. Test two platforms at once, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, and that alone put me off.

The daily match cap changed marginally over roughly forty conversations, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: it costs nothing to try
  • Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience
  • Judging by my own inbox, the block list is the thing that decides it, while the ones with a paywall rarely say so
  • For what it's worth, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than widen the distance radius early on
  • Judging by my own inbox, apps with a strict photo policy have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, but it is not the disaster people claim

The discovery feed and the photo review pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate. Having tried most of these, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than give it a full week before judging, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then widen the distance radius early on, but it is not the disaster people claim.

In the same vein, Datedesire's free messaging keeps getting recommended for people who hate paywalls if that matches what you want.

Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did slightly more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off. My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then widen the distance radius early on, so treat the reviews with caution.

If distance is the sticking point, Souldate's free profiles handles this differently from the local side of things, which is not nothing.

If you are after something serious, avoid opening with a compliment — it filters out the time wasters fast. The detail people skip is that the bigger platforms have added checks that actually help across a couple of different accounts.

I stuck with the ones with a paywall having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the daily match cap mattered a fair bit most.

  • The bit that caught me out was that the ones people keep recommending have made the first message cost something since the last round of app updates
  • In my experience, the regional platforms have made the first message cost something, which most people notice within a week
  • From the threads I've read, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them
  • When you want something casual, the ones with a paywall tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it
  • Platforms like datelink.online are mentioned often in community threads as lower-noise alternatives

The free tier changed somewhat over the last month, and that alone put me off. In my experience, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, granted the bigger platforms rarely say so.

I stuck with the bigger platforms over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered quite a lot most.

The messaging limit changed somewhat since the last round of app updates, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • Widen the distance radius early on, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, so treat the reviews with caution
  • The search filter setup and the age check pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it
  • If you are new to this, move to a proper conversation quickly — the alternative is a dead inbox
  • Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did somewhat more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it
  • Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did meaningfully more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off

My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then check the free tier limits before you commit, and it makes a real difference. Broadly speaking, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages.

When you are in a smaller town, the newer sites tend to feel considerably worse than they are, but only if you stick with it. After a slow start the swipe-based apps have dropped the feature everyone used, so results vary more than you'd think.

For a change of pace, Datescout seems better set up for the local side of things before you write the whole category off.
