Good question that deserves a real answer. The short version depends on what you're actually looking for. Is there an under 18 dating app for teens — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

Also been seeing datelink.online pop up in discussions around this. In the time i've been posting here I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the newer sites, and nobody warns you about it.

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

Over the last month most of the free apps have got noticeably worse for bots, though it depends heavily on where you live. Honestly, the chat-first sites have started throttling messages, and it shows in the reply rate. The awkward truth is that the bigger platforms have made the free version harder to use these past few weeks.

From what I've seen, the age check is the thing that decides it, granted the ones people keep recommending rarely say so. While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: most complaints trace back to that one thing.

What surprised me was that the ones with a paywall have dropped the feature everyone used across a couple of different accounts. When you have tried three apps already, the ones with a paywall tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Something worth flagging is that the chat-first sites have tightened up the reporting flow for the better part of a year.

Since the start of the year I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • When your inbox is dead, most of the free apps tend to feel considerably worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it
  • Speaking personally, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than say what you actually want up front, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • The free tier and the verification step pull in opposite directions, which most people notice within a week
  • Speaking personally, the ones people keep recommending have made the first message cost something, and nobody warns you about it
  • When you are after something serious, the niche ones tend to feel considerably worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution

Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: the difference in reply rate is obvious. Although the swipe-based apps look similar, the age check differs marginally, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Something worth flagging is that the older established sites have improved the filtering a fair bit after giving it a proper go. What actually mattered was that apps with a strict photo policy have quietly changed how that works after giving it a proper go. Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did a little more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while.

If you want another option, the newer Datedesire rooms moves faster on the local side of things.

What surprised me was that the chat-first sites have changed the matching order without saying so in the past six months. Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Even if the older established sites look similar, the matching algorithm differs a fair bit, which changes the whole experience.

In the same vein, the newer Luvdate rooms gets mentioned a lot for the verification question, which is not nothing.

In the past six months the bigger platforms have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, though it settles down after a while. When the replies dry up after one message, most of the free apps tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate.

Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because the alternative is a dead inbox, so results vary more than you'd think. When you are new to this, the ones with a paywall tend to feel slightly worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim. In my experience, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, though apps with a video option rarely say so.

Depending on what you are after, the Datewander regulars has fewer complaints about video-first chat — worth a fortnight of your time.

If you are new to this, test two platforms at once — that is where most people give up too early. For what it's worth, the newer sites have tightened up the reporting flow, so treat the reviews with caution.

Worth adding that DatingFly seems better set up for the local side of things.
