Since the last round of app updates I noticed the free tier behaving differently on most of the free apps, which explains a lot of the complaints here. What are the best dating apps for serious relationships in 2025 — I've seen it come up in other threads but never with a solid answer, so figured I'd ask directly.

  • Judging by my own inbox, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since it filters out the time wasters fast
  • While the ones with a paywall look similar, the moderation queue differs hardly at all, which changes the whole experience
  • The daily match cap changed noticeably in the time I've been posting here, which is worth knowing before you sign up

I've also been noticing flurrydate.online mentioned a fair bit lately in similar discussions. Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because it costs nothing to try, and it shows in the reply rate.

If you have tried three apps already, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

Keep the first message short and specific, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, but it is not the disaster people claim. The search filter setup changed slightly since the last round of app updates, so treat the reviews with caution.

Being blunt about it, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than test two platforms at once. I stuck with apps with a video option after a slow start, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered meaningfully most.

Over the last month the newer sites have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, and it makes a real difference.

For what it's worth, the newer Rendate rooms reads as more honest about people juggling two apps — worth a fortnight of your time.

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: it costs nothing to try. While apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the reporting system differs slightly, though it settles down after a while.

Going by last month's threads, Datenest's city pages does more than most for anyone after something slower before you write the whole category off.

Though the older established sites look similar, the age check differs somewhat, which explains a lot of the complaints here. If you want something casual, skip anything asking for a card number to read messages — it filters out the time wasters fast.

Going by my own attempts, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

  • To be fair, the bigger platforms have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, and nobody warns you about it
  • Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it
  • Granted the chat-first sites look similar, the reporting system differs somewhat, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • These past few weeks apps with a video option have dropped the feature everyone used, which most people notice within a week
  • If the replies dry up after one message, keep the first message short and specific — the alternative is a dead inbox

If the replies dry up after one message, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then say what you actually want up front, and nobody warns you about it.

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: it costs nothing to try. While the ones people keep recommending look similar, the boost system differs a fair bit, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

On the same subject, Datebie's free messaging seems better set up for casual browsing, so it is worth a look.

Even if the ones with a paywall look similar, the matching algorithm differs a great deal, though it depends heavily on where you live. Keep the first message short and specific, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

If you keep getting the same profiles, check the free tier limits before you commit — it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

In the past six months I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the chat-first sites, and nobody warns you about it. Throughout most of last year the older established sites have quietly changed how that works, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

What surprised me was that the photo review matters considerably more than the distance radius, but only if you stick with it. After giving it a proper go I noticed the verification step behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, which most people notice within a week.

Though the ones people keep recommending look similar, the profile prompt differs quite a lot, so results vary more than you'd think. If I'm honest, most of the free apps have quietly changed how that works, but only if you stick with it.

After giving it a proper go I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, so results vary more than you'd think. Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, which changes the whole experience.

Having tried most of these, the read receipt setting is the thing that decides it, though the forum-style sites rarely say so. Being blunt about it, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, even if the chat-first sites rarely say so.

When you keep matching but never talking, sites that skip verification tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think. Over the last month the swipe-based apps have quietly changed how that works, but only if you stick with it.

If you have limited time in the evenings, skip anything asking for a card number to read messages — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. What changed my mind was that the ones people keep recommending have cleaned up the fake accounts a little after a slow start.

If you want another option, turndate moves faster on people in smaller towns if that matches what you want.

Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did noticeably more for me than switching platform, which most people notice within a week. Broadly speaking, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than test two platforms at once, since that is where most people give up too early.

Regulars on this board add a current answer and it will get read.
