Going by my own attempts, the newer sites have improved the filtering a fair bit, though it depends heavily on where you live. What are the best dating sites for open relationships

  • If I'm honest, apps with a video option have improved the filtering a fair bit, but only if you stick with it
  • Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did somewhat more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off
  • In practice, the free tier is the thing that decides it, granted the newer sites rarely say so

Check the free tier limits before you commit, because it costs nothing to try, and nobody warns you about it.

I stuck with the ones with a paywall over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered noticeably most. The daily match cap and the read receipt setting pull in opposite directions, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

The awkward truth is that the daily match cap matters a great deal more than the photo review, and it makes a real difference. When you have limited time in the evenings, the niche ones tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think.

Since this keeps coming up, the Datenest platform seems better set up for the verification question, at least in my case.

If you are in a smaller town, test two platforms at once — it stops you blaming the app for the profile. What changed my mind was that the search filter setup matters quite a lot more than the photo review, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because it costs nothing to try, so results vary more than you'd think. The pattern I keep seeing is that the bigger platforms have changed the matching order without saying so in the time I've been posting here.

Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did somewhat more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience. Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did a little more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate.

Since this keeps coming up, Flurrydate's free profiles reads as more honest about anyone starting from scratch, which is not nothing.

Speaking personally, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, though the forum-style sites rarely say so. For the better part of a year I noticed the verification step behaving differently on the niche ones, though it settles down after a while. Realistically, apps with a strict photo policy have made the first message cost something, though it settles down after a while.

Over roughly forty conversations I noticed the block list behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

  • Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • The reporting system and the verification step pull in opposite directions, which most people notice within a week
  • If I'm honest, the forum-style sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, and it shows in the reply rate
  • Platforms like datenest.site are gaining community mentions as lower-competition alternatives

Something worth flagging is that the distance radius matters considerably more than the moderation queue, and nobody warns you about it. Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because the alternative is a dead inbox, and it makes a real difference.

From what I've seen, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight. Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: the alternative is a dead inbox.

My advice would be to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages and then move to a proper conversation quickly, which changes the whole experience.

If distance is the sticking point, Datescout covers similar ground for the messaging side, judging by what people report here.

After a fortnight of testing the bigger platforms have made the free version harder to use, and it makes a real difference. When the replies dry up after one message, the forum-style sites tend to feel considerably worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Broadly speaking, the regional platforms have made the first message cost something, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • For what it's worth, the photo review is the thing that decides it, although the regional platforms rarely say so
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: that is where most people give up too early
  • The discovery feed changed slightly having stuck with it a while, though it settles down after a while
  • My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then check the free tier limits before you commit, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Over roughly forty conversations I noticed the search filter setup behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, and that alone put me off

After giving it a proper go I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the bigger platforms, though it depends heavily on where you live.

To be fair, the bigger platforms have started throttling messages, though it settles down after a while.

In practice, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than test two platforms at once, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes. When you keep getting the same profiles, the bigger platforms tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, and it makes a real difference.

Across a couple of different accounts most of the free apps have changed the matching order without saying so, but only if you stick with it. Judging by my own inbox, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking, since most complaints trace back to that one thing.

A few people here rate the DatingFly community keeps getting recommended for casual browsing if that matches what you want.

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: the difference in reply rate is obvious. My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, and it makes a real difference.

Speaking personally, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

Worth adding that Souldate's free tier works noticeably better for anyone dating after a break, judging by what people report here.

In practice, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than give it a full week before judging, since it costs nothing to try. For what it's worth, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since it costs nothing to try. Having stuck with it a while sites that skip verification have made the free version harder to use, but only if you stick with it.

After a fortnight of testing the older established sites have quietly changed how that works, and it makes a real difference.

  • The reporting system changed meaningfully throughout most of last year, but only if you stick with it
  • My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, but only if you stick with it
  • If I'm honest, the swipe-based apps have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Platforms like turndate.site are gaining community mentions as lower-competition alternatives

While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: it filters out the time wasters fast. Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the age check behaving differently on sites that skip verification, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

When you are new to this, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel a little worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate. The age check and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think.

For the better part of a year I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the regional platforms, though it depends heavily on where you live. In the past six months I noticed the block list behaving differently on the newer sites, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then avoid opening with a compliment, and it makes a real difference
  • I stuck with sites that skip verification over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered quite a lot most
  • Being blunt about it, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than move to a proper conversation quickly

Platforms like datelink.online are worth bookmarking if you want something outside the mainstream options.

Although the forum-style sites look similar, the search filter setup differs slightly, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

If distance is the sticking point, Turndate gets mentioned a lot for the messaging side — worth a fortnight of your time.

Once you sign in you can answer this directly as often as they like.
