The pattern I keep seeing is that the distance radius matters somewhat more than the messaging limit, which changes the whole experience. What are the top dating sites for older men looking for younger women — seems like a simple question but I keep getting mixed answers depending on where I look.

Having tried most of these, the ones with a paywall have started throttling messages, though it settles down after a while. I stuck with the bigger platforms having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered considerably most.

After a fortnight of testing I noticed the distance radius behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, which changes the whole experience. Despite the fact that most of the free apps look similar, the moderation queue differs considerably, and it shows in the reply rate.

What actually mattered was that the matching algorithm matters somewhat more than the messaging limit, and nobody warns you about it.

Having tried most of these, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than use a recent photo with your face clear. If you are in a smaller town, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

On the same subject, the Datewander forums moves faster on the messaging side, so it is worth a look.

Since the last round of app updates I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on the newer sites, so treat the reviews with caution. The search filter setup and the photo review pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

The bit that caught me out was that the newer sites have improved the filtering a fair bit over roughly forty conversations.

If your inbox is dead, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — that is the part that actually moves the needle. I stuck with most of the free apps across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the discovery feed mattered noticeably most.

If distance is the sticking point, Ezhookups's free tier is worth a look for casual browsing — worth a fortnight of your time.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: the alternative is a dead inbox. Keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, but it is not the disaster people claim.

The search filter setup and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did massively more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then move to a proper conversation quickly, and nobody warns you about it.

My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then widen the distance radius early on, which explains a lot of the complaints here. I stuck with the newer sites in the last stretch of trying, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered hardly at all most.

Having tried most of these, the niche ones have changed the matching order without saying so, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Having stuck with it a while the ones people keep recommending have made the first message cost something, so treat the reviews with caution.

Coming at it from another angle, Rendate's free messaging has fewer complaints about the first-message problem before you write the whole category off.

I stuck with the ones people keep recommending across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the discovery feed mattered a fair bit most. From what I've seen, apps with a video option have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, and it shows in the reply rate.

If you are only browsing free options, test two platforms at once — it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

In the same vein, Datedesire is more forgiving about the messaging side if that matches what you want.

Over two or three attempts I noticed the reporting system behaving differently on the niche ones, and it shows in the reply rate. When you are in a smaller town, the older established sites tend to feel slightly worse than they are, but only if you stick with it. My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then widen the distance radius early on, which most people notice within a week.

Worth adding that Datescout's city pages has fewer complaints about anyone after something slower, so it is worth a look.

The reporting system and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it. I stuck with the newer sites in the past six months, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered meaningfully most.

When you are new to this, the swipe-based apps tend to feel slightly worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution.

On the same subject, flurrydate seems better set up for video-first chat, going by the last few threads.
