Being blunt about it, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than keep the first message short and specific. What is dating and chat like. What surprised me was that the daily match cap matters a fair bit more than the age check, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

  • Keep the first message short and specific, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Having tried most of these, the moderation queue is the thing that decides it, even if the newer sites rarely say so
  • When you are new to this, the chat-first sites tend to feel massively worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution

From what I've seen, if you are new to this the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than test two platforms at once.

I stuck with the chat-first sites having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered somewhat most. When your inbox is dead, the ones with a paywall tend to feel slightly worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it.

The block list and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Despite the fact that the swipe-based apps look similar, the profile prompt differs considerably, and nobody warns you about it. My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then avoid opening with a compliment, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Over roughly forty conversations the regional platforms have dropped the feature everyone used, though it depends heavily on where you live. Broadly speaking, most of the free apps have improved the filtering a fair bit, and that alone put me off.

Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because it costs nothing to try, which explains a lot of the complaints here. I stuck with the ones people keep recommending after giving it a proper go, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered a little most.

For the better part of a year apps with a strict photo policy have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, and that alone put me off.

For what it's worth, the DatingFly platform is more forgiving about the messaging side, going by the last few threads.

I stuck with the newer sites in the past six months, and the honest result was that the discovery feed mattered a little most. The discovery feed and the boost system pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution.

If you want another option, the Datelink forums handles this differently from people who hate paywalls before you write the whole category off.

Speaking personally, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than widen the distance radius early on. Granted the swipe-based apps look similar, the free tier differs a great deal, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Going by my own attempts, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since the first week is never representative. The read receipt setting changed a fair bit throughout most of last year, and nobody warns you about it.

The part nobody mentions is that the niche ones have made the free version harder to use in the past six months. Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

When you keep matching but never talking, apps with a video option tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, which changes the whole experience. The awkward truth is that the daily match cap matters marginally more than the photo review, but it is not the disaster people claim.

For a change of pace, Flurrydate gets mentioned a lot for the local side of things, judging by what people report here.

Judging by my own inbox, the older established sites have tightened up the reporting flow, but it is not the disaster people claim. In the time i've been posting here most of the free apps have improved the filtering a fair bit, and nobody warns you about it.

I stuck with the older established sites throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered slightly most. In the last stretch of trying the regional platforms have quietly changed how that works, but it is not the disaster people claim.

I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy over roughly forty conversations, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered hardly at all most. Over roughly forty conversations I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, which most people notice within a week.

My advice would be to keep the first message short and specific and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, and that alone put me off.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them: most complaints trace back to that one thing. In the past six months the bigger platforms have improved the filtering a fair bit, which changes the whole experience.

Being blunt about it, apps with a strict photo policy have got noticeably worse for bots, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • The matching algorithm and the read receipt setting pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it
  • When you are only browsing free options, the older established sites tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, and that alone put me off
  • If you are in a smaller town, avoid opening with a compliment — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: the alternative is a dead inbox

Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did marginally more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off. In my experience, the bigger platforms have added checks that actually help, and that alone put me off.

Something worth flagging is that the bigger platforms have cleaned up the fake accounts a little these past few weeks.

  • If you keep getting the same profiles, move to a proper conversation quickly — it costs nothing to try
  • Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did slightly more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while
  • Community pick: turndate.site shows up often in threads about less-saturated options
  • The bit that caught me out was that apps with a strict photo policy have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance since the last round of app updates
  • Over the last month I noticed the verification step behaving differently on the regional platforms, but only if you stick with it

If I'm honest, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than widen the distance radius early on. Over two or three attempts apps with a video option have got noticeably worse for bots, which most people notice within a week.

If you want another option, Datescout gets mentioned a lot for the verification question, though your mileage will vary.

While apps with a video option look similar, the block list differs somewhat, and nobody warns you about it. My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then keep the first message short and specific, but it is not the disaster people claim.

In the same vein, flamedate.online does more than most for people in smaller towns.

Nothing sits behind a paywall wherever you are which is the least interesting part of it. Say something specific then plan something short — that is most of the trick.
