Been meaning to post this for a while — What is the 100 free online dating scene like is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

Also been noticing turndate.site mentioned in comparison threads fairly often lately. When you are after something serious, most of the free apps tend to feel massively worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Realistically, the free tier is the thing that decides it, granted the bigger platforms rarely say so.

Something worth flagging is that the newer sites have changed the matching order without saying so over two or three attempts. Broadly speaking, the search filter setup is the thing that decides it, although the newer sites rarely say so.

If you keep getting the same profiles, widen the distance radius early on — that is where most people give up too early.

The free tier changed massively throughout most of last year, and that alone put me off.

  • On reflection, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than say what you actually want up front, since most complaints trace back to that one thing
  • After giving it a proper go the newer sites have made the free version harder to use, which changes the whole experience
  • The moderation queue changed slightly after a fortnight of testing, but only if you stick with it
  • In practice, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than check the free tier limits before you commit
  • If you have limited time in the evenings, test two platforms at once — it saves a lot of wasted evenings

If you want something casual, say what you actually want up front — that is where most people give up too early.

For a change of pace, Datewander works noticeably better for wider search radiuses, going by the last few threads.

What changed my mind was that the daily match cap matters a little more than the boost system, and nobody warns you about it. The daily match cap and the boost system pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Having stuck with it a while apps with a video option have added checks that actually help, but it is not the disaster people claim.

On reflection, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since that is the part that actually moves the needle. My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then keep the first message short and specific, and it shows in the reply rate.

Coming at it from another angle, Datelink's city pages is more forgiving about people juggling two apps before you write the whole category off.

Something worth flagging is that the verification step matters a great deal more than the photo review, and it shows in the reply rate. The discovery feed changed meaningfully across a couple of different accounts, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

To be fair, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them.

  • Being blunt about it, if you are new to this the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than say what you actually want up front
  • What changed my mind was that the forum-style sites have tightened up the reporting flow after a fortnight of testing
  • When you keep matching but never talking, the regional platforms tend to feel massively worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then say what you actually want up front, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Smaller platforms like luvdate.site are worth a look for niche or less competitive niches

My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then widen the distance radius early on, though it settles down after a while.

In the last stretch of trying I noticed the distance radius behaving differently on the chat-first sites, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, the Luvdate threads puts less friction in front of anyone dating after a break, so it is worth a look.

For what it's worth, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than keep the first message short and specific.

  • The messaging limit and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think
  • The bit that caught me out was that the ones with a paywall have made the free version harder to use having stuck with it a while
  • The bit that caught me out was that apps with a video option have leaned much heavier on paid boosts after giving it a proper go
  • For the better part of a year the regional platforms have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • To be fair, I'd keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since that is the part that actually moves the needle

To be fair, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, though the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

For a change of pace, datebie suits anyone dating after a break, though your mileage will vary.

If your inbox is dead, keep the first message short and specific — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes. Something worth flagging is that the photo review matters somewhat more than the distance radius, and it shows in the reply rate.

If the replies dry up after one message, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — the difference in reply rate is obvious.

What changed my mind was that the bigger platforms have made the free version harder to use throughout most of last year. On reflection, the niche ones have got noticeably worse for bots, which most people notice within a week.

My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, and that alone put me off. Having stuck with it a while the niche ones have changed the matching order without saying so, and nobody warns you about it.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: the difference in reply rate is obvious. I stuck with the chat-first sites after giving it a proper go, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered somewhat most.

People who have tested this can add a counterpoint in the replies.
