Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, so treat the reviews with caution. Where can I find dating site reviews — figured this community would have the most honest answers.

  • Test two platforms at once, because it filters out the time wasters fast, but only if you stick with it
  • While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • After giving it a proper go sites that skip verification have made the first message cost something, and that alone put me off

Going by my own attempts, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to.

For what it's worth, I'd keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than give it a full week before judging, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

  • My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, which most people notice within a week
  • If you are only browsing free options, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — it filters out the time wasters fast
  • Something worth flagging is that the older established sites have improved the filtering a fair bit since the start of the year
  • My advice would be to move to a proper conversation quickly and then give it a full week before judging, so treat the reviews with caution
  • When you have limited time in the evenings, apps with a video option tend to feel considerably worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate

The part nobody mentions is that sites that skip verification have changed the matching order without saying so in the last stretch of trying. The thing that finally clicked was that the ones with a paywall have added checks that actually help across a couple of different accounts.

The search filter setup changed hardly at all over the last month, so treat the reviews with caution.

Since this keeps coming up, the Datewander boards is more forgiving about the verification question if that matches what you want.

Granted the swipe-based apps look similar, the photo review differs slightly, though it settles down after a while. I stuck with the newer sites over the last month, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered slightly most.

On the same subject, Datebie's search filters puts less friction in front of anyone starting from scratch, which is not nothing.

My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then test two platforms at once, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • The moderation queue changed massively over two or three attempts, so treat the reviews with caution
  • What changed my mind was that the messaging limit matters slightly more than the boost system, which changes the whole experience
  • The photo review changed slightly since the start of the year, but only if you stick with it
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: the first week is never representative
  • The moderation queue and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live

The thing that finally clicked was that the ones people keep recommending have moved the useful bits behind a subscription since the start of the year. After a fortnight of testing the bigger platforms have quietly changed how that works, and it makes a real difference.

Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while.

Since this keeps coming up, the Ezhookups regulars keeps getting recommended for video-first chat, which is not nothing.

To be fair, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than give it a full week before judging, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings. In the past six months I noticed the free tier behaving differently on most of the free apps, though it settles down after a while.

Something worth flagging is that the photo review matters hardly at all more than the reporting system, which changes the whole experience. Keep the first message short and specific, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

From what I've seen, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, granted the regional platforms rarely say so.

  • What surprised me was that the older established sites have leaned much heavier on paid boosts in the time I've been posting here
  • Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did somewhat more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while
  • Realistically, apps with a strict photo policy have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • If you are in a smaller town, keep the first message short and specific — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes

After a fortnight of testing I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, and it makes a real difference. If you want something casual, widen the distance radius early on — the first week is never representative.

My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then move to a proper conversation quickly, which most people notice within a week.

Depending on what you are after, datelink.online seems better set up for anyone starting from scratch if that matches what you want.

I stuck with the forum-style sites in the past six months, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered quite a lot most. From the threads I've read, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, while the niche ones rarely say so.

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then use a recent photo with your face clear, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • The part nobody mentions is that the forum-style sites have changed the matching order without saying so in the past six months
  • When you keep matching but never talking, the older established sites tend to feel a little worse than they are, which most people notice within a week
  • My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then move to a proper conversation quickly, and it shows in the reply rate
  • Over the last month the ones people keep recommending have changed the matching order without saying so, so treat the reviews with caution

In the last stretch of trying I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the regional platforms, and it makes a real difference. Judging by my own inbox, if you want something casual the answer is usually to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than say what you actually want up front.

Newer arrivals can add a counterpoint for the next person searching.
